Removing a dented filter

I was a complese clot and picked up my camera bag yesterday with the back unzipped, and all of my gear took a spill. Everything is okay, but my telephoto landed filter-first, denting and shattering the UV filter. While the front element is completely unmarred and the rest of the lens operation is spot on (whew!) the filter ring is now dented and I haven't been able to remove it. I've tried brute strength and a pair of pliers so far, and it hasn't budged a bit. Any trips from the pros?

I dealt with this before I used pliers and a ton of patients and it finally but slowly came lose. Make sure you have the lens on manual and also hold the lens very tightly also dont put your weight on the lens you could possible bend on mess the lens up when it tries to focus.

My filter did not shatter but it did bend in one spot so the rings were out of alingment and it just got stuck in that position. Once I finally got the lens off it was fine. Just be carefull.

Get a filter wrench that fits the filter - it will work much better and easier for a stuck filter. It gets better purchase and has more leverage. Cheap too - $5-10 -call B&H or Adorama and get one that fits properly..

Carry in in your camera bag.

I was starting to consider that, prior to knowing about filter wrenches. :D
