1000mm Test Drive - 500/4 + 2xTC

The following two shots were taken from my rear deck last evening. The birds were perched in a tree just beyond the rear fence of our property. I estimate the cardinal was at a distance of about 65 feet and the dove another 10 feet beyond that. Both shots are approximately a 50% crop.

The detail preserved in these two shots just blew me away. I would give up my first-born before giving up this lens.

1D MkIIn, 500 f/4L IS + 2xTC, tripod mounted, ISO500, wide open @ f/8, 1/500 sec.

Okay, this is the last 'Test Drive'. Only real world stuff from now on. Well, maybe just a 1400mm Test Drive at some time.

Thanks for looking.

I may be going out on a limb here, but I believe he was aiming at the birds, which look fine. rolleyes1.gif

They're great shots no matter what the focal length. And impressive job of focusing at that distance in such busy surroundings. thumb.gif

Harv, in the interest of marital harmony, I must insist you stop posting shots using this lens. deal.gif

Thanks vey much. Joel. The focus point was able to pick up the bird's head ouit of the surroundings and the camera is pretty accurate.

Dealing with the wife is no problem. Mine encouraged me to get the lens after I hemmed and hawed for almost a year. Of course, she had just booked a trip to Europe for October with her girlfriend. That might have had something to do with it. rolleyes1.gif

Thanks a lot, Emmalou. I appreciate the kind words. These guys are very skittish and won't come near the feeders. Having 1000mm available was the only way to get these guys.

    Aloha,

Wow! They sure are a surprise, I would have thought that they would have been way soft with all of the degrading the 2x puts in. I love the male cardinal realistic color and so sharp. I guess the lens is good and sharp same as the operator!!!
By the way thanks for the exposure info on the osprey, all of that info helps one.

I really like your shots and I'm supprised too about the preservation of detail at so much magnification.

I personally would choose 1.4x. I expect more awesome results from it.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Dick.

Hi, Peter. Thanks for the comments. I agree that the 2x will degrade the image with many lenses, but not with the Canon supertele lenses. They were designed to work together and I find that with both my 500/4 and 300/2.8 they work superbly. With the 1.4x you can't tell the difference without instruments to measure.

Thanks, Dick. As I mentioned in the previous post, both the 1.4x and the 2x work great with this lens.
