So I walked out the door this morning to get the newspaper and almost stepped on this guy.. He was on the walk but by the time I got my camera he was on the yard. The gravel below him is about 3/4 to 1 inch in size, so you can get a good idea how big he was.
The picture isn't very good because it was early and my AF wasn't working yet (no coffee).
This is only the second Tarantula I've seen in Arizona, they don't get caught in the open very often. I always wonder how many have crawled on me when I sit for hours, waste deep in scrub and brush, waiting to get that elusive shot. Gives me the creeps a little when I think about it cause I don't like spiders at all.
He sauntered off as if I wasn't there and I continued back to get my first cup of coffee.

I hate this guy, but what a shot Your AF looks okay to me. And the DOF makes this guy almost jump off the screen ... sorry, gotta go, too scary.
Great job (especially so early and sans coffee).

I got down pretty close to him, they don't move very fast, but I was ready just in case.
I know they are around but they are seldom seen and not my choice of critters to come eye to eye(s) with first thing in the morning.
Hopefully it will be a couple more years before I see another one.

I had it titled "Good Morning Mr. Tarantula" but after I thought about it I had to shorten it just cause I wanted to surprise you..
Sorry, but I just couldn't resist.. !!
Oh, by the way, I used a short lens that almost touched him, but I wasn't worried cause he hadn't had his coffee either and from lookin at him I could tell he had been out alllll night !!
