I've thrown this idea out there before, but it would be really trick if I could just create a whole subcat and make it pw protected. I'm just curious as to if anybody else out there thinks it's a good idea.

I think it would also be neato to be able to make a category "invisible" from my main page but the galleries within would be visible, to whoever I give a category link to. Anybody else keen on this? If not I'll stop pestering the help@smugmug and just be happy lol...

I agree it would be nice to be able to password protect an entire category, but I think smugmug already accomplishes what you're looking for -- although in a nonobvious way.

If you make all galleries in a category private, the category no longer appears on your home page. You can, however, select any galleries you want to and put them into a "Share Group," which is like a private category -- it has its own URL, which you can give to anyone you want. If you want additional security, you can also password protect the galleries within the share group. (If a person types the password in for one share group, a cookie is saved so that he won't be asked for the password on other galleries w/ the same pw.)

Does that sound like what you want to do?

I'm new here but couldn't you make the galleries invisible (so they can't be seen on the main page) and then add them to a share group and send that link to people?

Okay I'm familiar with the fact that if I have a category and make all the galleries within it invisible the category of course will be invisible, I already have that on my gallery for my own private "storage bin" galleries. But what's a sharegroup? I see nothing about sharegroups in the "customize gallery" menu... But this sounds exactly like what I want, to be able to give one link, or one password, and have people then be able to view multiple galleries within that one category / sharegroup...

For share groups there is a button on the top of your main page that says "sharegroups" (it is with the create "new gallery", "account settings", etc.. buttons).

Click that and then the "new group" button to create a sharegroup. After you create a sharegroup click on "list" (next to the "new group" button) and then "add galleries". Then copy the url from the sharegroups main page and send that to your friends.
