Another dull, dreary day on the deck.

Most of what I saw today was rain and/or overcast. It would have been a waste of time going out to shoot ospreys so I spent a little time on my deck (which has a roof) and tried for some critter portraits.

Id MkIIn, 300 f/2.8L IS, fill flash w/ 430EX at -2/3 FEC, ISO400, f/5.6, 1/320

Thanks, Emmalou. You're very kind. We're pretty lucky as our property backs up to a conservation area. It holds a lot of wildlife and we get a lot at our feeders. Anything from chickadees to rabbits to squirrels to coyotes. All you have to do to shoot from my deck is travel to Ontario. mwink.gif

Thanks a lot, Stephen. Yes, it sure helps on viewing brightness and accurate focus. It's also a pretty sharp hunk of glass.

Hi Harv.. It rained here today too, that's a good thing around here though.

    I have a question for you and the other 300, 400, 500, 600 shooters.
Have you ever used the internal circular polarizer that Canon sells that fits all the super-tele's. The CL-P52 by Canon.

I bought one today but haven't used it yet. Thought it might be a good thing for our Arizona blue skies and the lakes I photo on, lots of glare.

Just curious if you had or do use one. It is very well made and seems to fit and operate very solid.

It says in the brochure that the lens glass in these lenses was specifically designed to have a filter used at all times and not to operated them without one. But on my 300 and 500 all that comes is a clear glass plug, it doesn't say if the clear glass is a filter of any type or just a protector (besides plugging the hole).

The Canon package brochure was pretty vague except for the "a filter must be used at all times". I know they weren't just talking about the hole because it specifically said the lens glass was designed for a filter at all times.. a strange statement.

    Just curious. Thanks

Thanks very much, Glenn. When we built the house 6 years ago, we specified a covered deck because I'm a smoker bu tdon't smoke in the house. It's definitely turned out to be a bonus for some of my bird photography. The other bonus is the conservation area that borders our property at the rear. It holds a lot of birds.

Hi, Chris. The short answer to your question is 'no'. I have owned several lenses of this type over the years and have never used a PL filter. Living where I do, I never seem to have enough light to sacrifice some to a PL. It's most often a struggle to keep the shutter speed up to where I want it with the long glass and animate subjects. Another reason I don't use one is that I don't want to remove the holder when in the field to adjust the filter. If any dust got inside that area, I don't have a clue how I would get it out without sending the lens to Canon.

As for the supplied element in the filter holder, I assume it would be of filter quality, coated glass. Given how much we spend for these lenses, I can't imagine Canon (or anyone else) using window glass. :D

I would be very interested in your impressions once you've used yours.

    Harv
