Concert Pics - Travis
Travis is my favorite band. They are a group from Scotland that while not extremely well known in the US have a very loyal fan base and they sell out whenever they tour here. Travis opened the door to the US for groups such as Keane and Coldplay. They're just a group of really nice guys doing what they love. They are a fantasic live band and if you get the chance to see them, you should go. This past Monday they came to DC and played for a sold out crowd at the 9:30 club. The 9:30 club has very strict rules regarding "professional" cameras. If it has interchangeable lenses it's "pro" and you can't bring it in. I did the "are you serious?" thing and the main security guy let me in as long as a I left the 50mm on. Thank goodness I had just gotten it two days before for my cousin's wedding!

:skippy Everyone has the right to be stupid, but some people just abuse the privilege :dgrin
Thanks Saurora!! Besides being a great sounding band they are just so much fun. The energy at the concerts is just amazing. And, they're just super nice fellas. The D50 doesn't have the best high ISO performance, but I don't notice too big of an improvement between 800 and 1600, so most we shot at 800, a few at 400 when the lights were up. I have quite a few color shots, but I converted a good number to black and white, it just worked for them. I cheat at conversions though, I did these in RAW and the adjusted contrast and exposure until I thought they looked good, but I've got a rather bright screen so I was worried they may be too dark to everyone else.
Thanks again for the compliments!!

Thanks Skippy! Oh and yeah I totally tracked down that security guy after the concert and said, "Thanks"!! HAha, I purposefully didn't post the shot of me with Andy since you said he was scary looking, but here's one of him with my friends Amanda and Amy.
Last time they were in the US someone had a polaroid camera and we did pictures that way and I had a plectrum from him autographed.
Another really fun group to see in concert was Big and Rich, but that crowd was much larger and it wasn't standing room like the 9:30 club so it was more like watching on a giant TV screen with great surround sound.

Now, having just tried for the first time last night to photograph a musician while playing under crappy lighting and getting nowhere near the quality you've posted here, I have to ask: how did you keep your ISO so low and keep the images so sharp? I would think the lower ISO would limit a faster shutter speed and higher aperture, but you have such shallow DOF and clarity. How?
And for the record, I've been a fan of Travis since college (won't divulge how many years, exactly, that is). I can't believed I missed them performing locally!!
