Manual exposure is easy, even without a separate light meter. A quick way to initially set your camera is to take a snapshot of something similar in whiteness to the bird. For terns in the reserve, I use a white sign or someone's white shirt. Follow your histogram. And then keep checking your histogram as the light changes. If you do have a light meter, under-expose from the meter reading by 0.3 to 0.7 ev, again checking your histogram as you take shots. Remember: expose to the right to maximize the info in your raw files.
