    Welcome to Dgrin clap.gif

Two very nice capture you have there.

The whites are a bit strong, but you did not have much time to set your camera.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Dick.

Nice shots, Cap. These are hard ones to get--the terns are moving fast when they plunge into the water, and there are a lot of things besides the bird for the camera to focus on. You're off to a great start.

Regarding the blown-out whites, the trick I learned from the experts is to only use manual exposure. If you use auto metering, you run the risk that the camera will be sensing the dark water and over exposing the white bird.

Manual exposure is easy, even without a separate light meter. A quick way to initially set your camera is to take a snapshot of something similar in whiteness to the bird. For terns in the reserve, I use a white sign or someone's white shirt. Follow your histogram. And then keep checking your histogram as the light changes. If you do have a light meter, under-expose from the meter reading by 0.3 to 0.7 ev, again checking your histogram as you take shots. Remember: expose to the right to maximize the info in your raw files.
