i'm not sure about how things work in ny, but departments local to where i'm at have sworn officers that are investigative staff. there are some of them that pick up specialties like locksmithing, photography, etc. for instance, one of our investigators is a forensic locksmith; the dept sent him to certification classes for it. you'll find that a lot of these classes are available only to law enforcement and not ordinary civilians. the other way to get around this is to go through a security firm that has any type of specialty in this field. of course there are people that join law enforcement just so they can get access to these LE-only classes, get their certs, then startup their own personal businesses.

    Forensic Photography
    KvPhoto,

In NYC, Forensic Photography is hanlded by 2 agencies: The New York City Police Department and the New York City Office of the Medical Examiner.

With the NYPD, some Forensic Photography is handled by the Crime Scene Unit while other aspects are handled by civillian specialists in the lab.

The NYPD also has a Photo Unit that sends sworn officers into the field to document certain events, including cermonies and other major events.

Other states or departments outside of NYC might operate differently.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the info! I have gotten curious about the more 'obscure' photography careers in the world. (forensics, opthalmology, medical, etc.)

Where in the Bronx? I am on the West side of the Bronx along the Hudson River just south of Yonkers.
