MAJOR Canon rave!

Let's start off with my 50mm f1.4.... I had to send it off to Canon because it was not focusing at all. I called them up, set up the repair, sent it off two day. But as i got all the paperwork together, I realized it was 45 days past warranty. :cry Bummer.

Oh, well. So I waited patiently for them to send me an email confirmation that they were working on it and.... they decided to fix it under warranty! :clap

YAY!

Then last weekend I went camping and, long story short, my water bottle leaked onto my 5D. (This was after camping right when we came home that it happened.) :huh I pulled the battery out and "drip drip".... And pulled teh card out and a few more drops. (Got all the pictures off.) Immediately dried it, ran a warm hair dryer over it to get it visibly dry and left it alone until the next morning. Popped in the battery. Nothing.:huh Crap.

So, once again, called Canon, set up repair, shipped it off and waited. No email. No email. So I called. After giving me a new repair ticket number, she informed me that they were covering it under WARRANTY!

I have to tell you, I almost passed out right then and there. I was NOT expecting that as this is NOT covered in the warranty! It was less than a year old, but it was essentially neglect (and they knew this). I am still a bit floored by them doing this....

So, needless to say, Canon has a customer for life. They have been AMAZING and fast and so wonderful with their service.

I'm sure I"ll hear a horror story or two, but they have treated me really well.

:clap :clap :clap For Canon!

If you think about it from a business standpoint... spending a couple hundred bucks on someone's camera will instantly make them a very loyal customer. With the market as competitive as it is, and with the amount of money each customer usually spends (especially if they already have a 5D), then I think they are running things the right way. They could have refused warranty on both items, you could cut your losses, sell your gear, and start buying nikon stuff (and bad mouthed canon all over the forums).

Its funny, but customers that have problems with a product and get it fixed to their (or above their) satisfaction are more loyal than customers that never have a problem with the product! Doesn't look right on paper, but if you think about your feelings before and after the accidents i'm sure you will agree.

yeah i wish Nikon would adopt this similar mindset. they're such sticklers to protocol. I've heard that Canon USA will repair even gray market Canon stuff. Nikon USA on the other hand, won't even give you the time of day if it's not US-market sourced.

This is exactly my thought. I had the feeling that they did this because of the loyalty. I'm also guessing it didn't cost a lot to fix my 5D in spite of the water damage. But the truth is, I never would have whined about it (well, about THEM, I would have whined!) if they had charged me - it was totally within their right. But you're right, fixing it for me caused this post! And maybe even a convert..... ;)

You won't go wrong!! I think the equipment, while slightly different, obviously, it very much equal, all things considered. But when you throw in customer service.... It tips the scales for me!

    Make it 2...
Reading this....I kinda dropped my idea of buy more stuff for my nikon.
I was anyways thinking of shifting on canon platform. This thread just hammered the last nail in.

All canon lenses are made in Japan, so buying the "non-us" model is exactly the same as the "US" model... maybe some paperwork differences. Canon will warranty any canon made lens regardless of where it came from. Bodies are not warrantied the same. This info came from a canon rep while I was at a jets game shooting...

I've been shooting Canon, off and on, for a couple of decades and have always been pleased with the product. I have not yet needed to test their customer service (knock on wood), but stories like your's pop up every once in a while. They tend to make a believer of your.

Thanks for the post - always nice to hear a good story with a happy ending.

And the joy and anticipation! Sound like fun. I'm guessing we'll be seeing a lot of your stuff in the Flea Market in the coming months?

And the joy and anticipation! Sound like fun. I'm guessing we'll be seeing a lot of your stuff in the Flea Market in the coming months?

I am a true minimalist at heart......I take a long look at what I want to do and then I get the equipment I need.....nothing more...do my best to keep it simple....so now I have the 2 KM 7D's, 1-70-210 2.8 APO, 24-70 2.8 and a 28-200 3.5 - 5.6 (all siggy and all tack sharp)......I haven't seen anyone flyin' the KM flag here sooooooooooo.............
I am also a member (but haven't been active) on Dyxum.com ..... a totally KM / sony forum......and their flea market might just have to be where I drop of this specialized set of cameras and lenses........

However......anything not totally KM will be put up here....such as some bags, books, sunpak 622's and my Paul Buff White Lightening 5000's, stroboframes,Suzuki GS850 (yes this photo equip as it carries my gear and me to shoots...so it is just an extension of my bags:D an 83 with just over 10K original miles) and anything else I decide to cut out of my inventory........this will be a downsize of sorts and also it is time to rebuy equipment if I am going to be serious again, as I will need the tax deductions......now to decide if I want to get truly serious or just keep as a hobby

I am trying to decide which Canon to start with....I do not see much difference between the XTi and 30D......but I truly want full frame so I can feel totally comfy once again with 35mm style framing and shooting.... but may have to go crop body to start withdang decisions, decisions, stress and pain.....Oh me oh my........what to do......what to do..........

Of course I have seen more canon repair discussions here than Nikon and I still have a Nikon film body also.....and since I do wildlife and landscaping I like the GPS ability of the top Nikon's......as the only software I have found to use otherwise..leaves a bit to be desired if your clocks are not synced (cam and GPS) and it ahsn't been updated in a few yrs.........

That's great news Andi! clap.gif Canon is pretty savvy in their thinking in regards to customer service. It really doesn't cost them much to repair, I'm sure, and look at the "free" advertising you just did for them in this thread to all of these thousands of viewers? Heck, you've already cinched 2 sales for them and probably many more that aren't even responding to your thread. Go Canon!!! wings.gif

That would probably be due to the fact that probably 75% ofthe users here shoot Canon. deal.gif I have not personally had to use Canon's repair department on any of my equipment, and neither has any Canon shooter I know personally.

75%? Hmmm We should make a poll. I shoot Nikon, and have 0 complaints so far other than distribution/availibility of lenses. Great cameras, but stories like this one definitely make a strong case for Canon.

There is a big difference in handling between the Xti and 30D, I strongly recommend trying both in the hand before buying. Xti is lighter and doesn't feel so robust and the 30D has one or two functions the Xti doesn't. BTW everyone is waiting on the 40D (Sept?ne_nau.gif )so no harm in waitingmwink.gif

If you wanna go FF the the 5D is probably about as cheap as it's going to get so now would be the time to buy and get the full width of the new juicy wideangles you're going to lust aftermwink.gif :lol

Well, the full-frame 5D is coming down in price since they're getting closer to the release of their 7D or 6D or what ever it's going to be. thumb.gif

Well, I pulled a number out of my butt, however it is true that the vast majority are Canon shooters (that's why we tease Harry so much. :D ).

i'll standby harry as a nikon shooter. although if they don't come out with a real pro camera that's got better dynamic range and better noise control soon, i'm going fuji. i can even forego a full frame sensor (gasp).

    I was not so lucky.
I took a long walk with my wife and camera.
Me with the 5d and 70-200 F2.8 IS lens
Her with the old 10D and a 75-300 lens.
It started to rain even though it wasn't supposed to. Not a hard rain. Not even enough of a rain to warrant changing when we got home.
I put my camera in the camera bag when it first started to rain.
The wife ignored her camera entirely. Just left it slung over her shoulder still turned on. Get back to the house and every thing seems fine until I try and turn on my 5D. Nothing. No lights Nada.
Take it in to a repair depot..they ship it to Canon and I get a quote for $1975 to repair the camera.

Needless to say the 5D is not part of my kit any longer.
But the 10D is fine. My wife has even takent it to cave of the winds and maid of the mists etc at niagara falls doing nothing to protect it with no ill affects. Something I would have never done with the 5D.

The person at Canon I talked with just said I must have cornered the market on bad luck the day of the walk. :(

I just took a 70-200/4L into to get fixed... it was like 100 bucks but it was fixed in 7 days no problemo. I also dropped off one of my bodies for a comp cleaning thumb.gif

I gotta tell you... being a photographer and working a mile from the Canon service center really kicks butt. I gotta see if they have any factory/refirb deals there....
