Questions re adding photos to sub-category and private galleries

I'm trying to set up my first private gallery and need it to operate with the following criteria:


All I really want is to be able to view all the pictures in a sub-category without having to add another layer such as with a gallery. I will have several sub-categories and would like the pictures to be displayed at this level. I currently can only add pictures by adding a gallery to the sub-category which is redundant.

If you put the image's gallery in a category, rather than in a sub-category, then you will get this effect.
