After a short stop in the USA, I will be continuing on my around the world trip next week and I have a problem - too much stuff! I want to travel light and right now my packs are too heavy!!!!!
i will be going first to SE Asia then onto Aus/NZ. The problem is the majority of my weight is camera related. i travel with carry on size backpacks, i have a lowepro compuroverxti, dell laptop (4.5pds), 50mm 1.8, sigma 10-20, a manfrotto tripod (about 3 pounds) and a canon 80-200L IS (older model, and heavy 3 pds +),
i want to eliminate about 5 pounds, the other stuff i bring is very light, 2 t-shirts, 2 short sleeve shirts, 2 pair pants, light weight raincoat and not much else.
i was thinking of leaving the computer but the more i think about it, the more i think i may need it. i may use it for other business purposes but i don't know for sure. since i am going to be for a year, i didn't want to get behind on my photos so i wanted to use lightroom to process them. then i was thinking, maybe i can download lightroom in an Internet cafe every few weeks and spend a day or two managing my photos and storing the databases/photos on an external hard drive and DVDs.
i am thinking of leaving the tripod i (it adds weight and is big and bulky!) and the 80-200mm behind because i figure i would get 80%-85% of the photos i want to take with my other lenses. this would lighten up my load considerably, by 15%-25%.
am i missing anything???? any advice suggestions?
cheers,
Dave

ABSOLUTELY! you forgot your underwear! can't go globetrekking without clean shorts!
i'd trade the big tripod for *gasp* a little portable one with the collapsible legs. the hokey kind found at chain camera stores for $10 USD. it goes from about 6 inches to 3 feet. not the tallest around, but it's relatively lightweight and really compact. it's a lot easier to stow in a backpack.
perhaps a "travel lens" of the 28-200 variety is in order as well. tamron makes one. you may sacrifice a little bit of sharpness, but you also lose quite a bit of weight and space compared to the 80-200.
have a splendid time!
