Last Photographer Standing Contest Qualifying Round #10

Welcome to Contest #10, a qualifying round. This round is open to any dgrin member! It will run from Monday, July 23rd 00:01 (12:01am), NYC time (GMT -5) to Monday, August 6th 00:01 (12:01am), NYC time (GMT -5)

The topic ready for your interpretation: Surf or Turf.

Hello Shay !

Since I am from the Netherlands and english isn't my native language, :bigbs
I have a little trouble to understand exactly what you mean with:
"surf or turf".:scratch
It sounds a bit like a threat; like something clint -dirty harry-eastwood :bwgcould say :"Go ahead punk, surf or turf and make my day ".
Maybe you could explain a bit about the new contest theme to us
ignorant foreigners. :jfriend

Thanks,

Peter Dumont
(Sorry for the smilies; just couldn't resist.):dgrin

Not sure if this helps or not, but Surf and Turf literally means "Water and Earth." "Turf" is basically grass, and "Surf" is, of course, waves.

In the United States, there is a meal called "Surf and Turf" which is basically steak served with a side of Shrimp or perhaps lobster. The cow represents the Turf (the land), and the Shrimp or Lobster represent the Surf (the water).

    Thank you for your explaination.

    But wait there is more!

In some restaurants you can order the "Surf and Turf". This will generally get you a giant american-super-sized meal of seafood (lobster most likely) and a good steak along with all the patat frites you can eat (sorry no [SIZE=-1]frietsaus here). So Surf=Lobster Turf=Cow

Hmmm. where is the local seafood market, I need to go shoot now and get some dinner. This is making me hungry :D

    Dot Ziens!

I could see this too: "Go ahead punk, paddle my beer and make my day "

Vincent: You know what they put on French fries in Holland instead of ketchup?
    Jules: What?
    Vincent: Mayonnaise.
    Jules: Goddamn.
Vincent: I've seen 'em do it, man. They f*****g drown 'em in that s**t.

Now I'm hungry. Bier, patat frites, fritesaus, langoest. Yummm MAybe I'll figure out what to shoot on a full tummy.

Just remember this theme is surf or turf, not surf and turf. As I am wont to say, combining themes rarely works so your chances are better if you choose one or the other.

And the theme is open to interpretation, so no hard and fast definitions will be given. A quick look at the dictionary for surf and another look at turf will get you started. Where you go from there is up to your imagination mwink.gif

What, which one to follow? Welcome to the club :-) rolleyes1.gif

Actually, quite many of us managed to capture both in one shot at different rounds, and quite a few even ended up in the top ten. mwink.gif

Please correct me if I am wrong.
Can "surf or turf" has the meaning / sense of ambiguity ?

In that sense 1.st Peter's photo is quite ambiguous in my opinion.

Can we, or can't we play with the lion ?
Is he, or isn't he dangerous ?
He looks friendly but he is dangerous... May be he isn't ...
    Etc.
