One way is to mark all of the galleries within that category as private. The galleries are still available to be direct-linked (if needed), but the category will not show up unless you are logged in.

    hi thanks denise,

i was hoping there was an easier way, i think i have about 80 galleries in the categories i want to hide.

not to sound dumbe, but what do you mean by hot linked?

also, if i make them private and i am logged in, can other people see them as well or are they just available to me?

my problem is i have used my smugmug account to store all my travel photos, but now i want to show only my best (still the travel photo for my blog subscribers) and make my site look a little more professional.

    cheers,

    dave

Private means they are not on your homepage. If people have the URL they can get to them. Passworded means they can't get in.

Oh and try the EXCELLENT SmugBrowser Firefox plugin to manage those 80 galleries thumb.gif

A gallery that is private isn't shown when not logged in unless you link to it directly. For example, I have a guestbook gallery on my site. It's marked as private so it doesn't show on the gallery page. But it is visible using the guestbook link (or if anyone knows the gallery number).

Another option would be not to hide the galleries but maybe to re-think the categories. I think that it wouldn't look so overwhelming if some of the categories had sub-categories. You've already done that with your People and Travel galleries. Maybe some of the other categories might fit together. If you have less categories then the initial entry to the site might be less overwhelming to people.

But updating 80 galleries - have you tried SmugBrowser? It lets you customize galleries in bulk at the account, category, or sub-category levels. Maybe that's the answer if you really just want to hide the 80 galleries from public view. Here's a link to the thread about SmugBrowser:

Oops! Andy beat me to the answers... But two answers are better than none, right?
