Do you have a point & shoot camera in addition to your "good" camera?
Once I bought my DSLR (back in November '06), I ditched my point & shoot for good and considered it "junk". However, I bought my husband one of those mini Sony digital cameras (he likes to keep it in his pocket to take snaps of things...he does a lot of landscaping & woodworking so if he's out & about he'll take pics of things he likes).
Anyhow, I've recently starting carrying his little camera in my pocket when we're out fishing, at the park, etc. It's about the size of a wallet, and so easy! And, for snapshots, it really takes nice pictures! It also does little movies, which is nice.
I'm so glad I stopped being a camera snob and started using his camera for our family shots...because I don't need EVERY picture of my son to be a framable work of art, you know? I still use my DSLR when I do posed pics of him or if we go to a really cool spot, though.

my P&S is just so outdated, i am just too frustrated by the IQ and limited options. But from what I see, the mid range P&S's are really nice, i'd just rather buy another SLR lens than a $400 P&S

It takes very good pictures with good lighting. I love movie mode as well..

I carry the same camera around too-- it's great for quick snaps AND water work. I do a lot of canoeing and snorkelling, so it's nice to have a camera handy for snaps or underwater shots.
Went on a weeklong car camping trip last week and realized between the DSLR's and the Pentax and the cell phone camera, I actually had four cameras with me! I used them all-- except the cell cam (the cell was OFF all week ) -- even though it really wasn't a photo trip.

I'll take my beloved XT and its glass when it's warranted, but there's a Canon P&S in the laptop bag I work out of every day, and sometimes there is a moment that comes up and it's easy to reach in the bag and grab the shot, where if I was a snob about P&Ss there would have been no shot at all.
It's so much easier now, because there is one thing today's better digital point and shoots have that the film ones did not have: manual control. For aperture, shutter speed, exposure, flash exposure, and focus. As another example, check out what the Strobist guy does with a point and shoot (including the classic "shoe mount" remote flash stand ).

That being said, I did not take it with me on my recent trip to Nova Scotia. I figured I'd always have my SLR with me. I didn't miss anything. But next trip, I'll make sure I bring it, just in case.
