Cool. That looks fast. I don't seem to see the traceroute that you ran to SmugMug. We'll need that one too. Email us at the help desk with it and referrence this post.

    Here's yet another speedtest:
    162687357.png

The reason for all three speed tests? To see what different speeds I get form different parts of the country. It appears to me that the San Jose site is much slower than the other two sites I used. Maybe someone needs to look into this.

Yes, one more speedtest. This one from San Francisco.

There's obviously a problem with the San Jose server.

Actually, 60ms from line 1 to line 2 isn't very good. That should be your home shooting information to your ISP and back. You should be within a few miles of your ISP's equipment to even have internet and anything over 20ms should raise your concern.
To see more of the puzzle, we will need to have a traceroute run from SmugMug to your computer so that we can start to see the connection when we are sending you information. If you click on this link, it will run that test for you. http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg
We'll need both to and from information from everyone that is having a problem with their speed. Just one way won't give us enough information. If eveyone would run both then get us that information, we'll take a look.

Thanks for the response, but in New Zealand, 60ms is perfectly normal. As it happened I managed to get interleaving switched off last night on my DSL line, that's taken the first hop down to 28ms. In NZ, Interleaving is on by default, and 60ms is a perfectly normal first hop with the default depth of interleaving here.

I'll do the tracert from you to me tonight when I get home.

    Cheers -N

THIS is really useful. Traceroutes both ways.
Neil, please keep giving us these, and obviously it's more helpful to us when you get them at the time when things are not so fast.

I've been experiencing 20-30 second load times all day today from NY. I can live with longer times when I'm sitting at my computer alone, but when it comes time to show off my pics in the presence of others, it's absolutely maddening.

    bulk upload speeds
sorry, late to this thread -- and there might be a better one for my question.

I started a upload of a large batch of pics last night to test speeds, the upload ran for about an hour, then failed. It uploaded about 125 photos, or about 450MB (7.5MB per minute) before it failed.

Is that speed slow? normal? about right?

I used the drag & drop upload on a PC via local server - is there a better, faster app for bulk upload? Are there time-out limits for uploads?

Using a Comcast business cable connection from NJ.

    Thks for any insights, ideas.

I haven't really noticed any speed issues the last few days, but a customer in Savannah Georgia called with about the slowness there. I accessed at the same time and it was fine.

I have now come to accept that sometimes traffic can be slow somewhere on the internet and can many down. Came across an article very relavent to this same internet speed topic.
