I love my 85mm for family shots
I tried out the 85 mm for part of my family shots today. I wasn't willing to try a new lens on a new family, but I used it a bit! I LOVE how sharp it is! It's so much better than my 50 mm for the full-body stuff. I still adore my 50 mm for close-ups, but this 85 is pretty good. I'm not sure if you can tell in a pic this size or not, but here's an example:

I never knew that a normal, sound, and otherwise level headed grown woman could get this excited about a new lens!!! (lol) I am almost tempted to buy my wife one !!
Im just teasing you. I am fast falling in love with my 85 too. I did some full bodies with it this week and got super results. I also mixed in some shots with the old 50mm, and was reminded that it is still an excellent performer.
By the way, my wife probably couldn't turn my slr on!!! I might just buy her a 70-200mm anyway!!! Or a 10-20mm!!! or a......
Oh well congrats again on your new love, now show us some more stunning photos!!!

There's actually a huge difference, but I don't think it's noticeable at this size.
Jeff, don't worry, I'm not going to leave my husband for the 85 mm. BUT, I will admit to neglecting him some since I bought it.
