Remove nickname

Hello;
I have removed my nickname from my gallery pages but when I hover over my images I still see the nickname followed by the caption or file name. How can I control what shows up while hovering over images?

    Hi,

    How about No. 28 here? Would that work?

    This relates to a feature request I posted.

    I have a pro site with a custom domain name. Having my name or nickname used at the beginning of the breadcrumbs (as a link to my homepage), or in the hover text, or search results is confusing to visitors. They don't know that my site is part of a larger community of websites. They just know they're on my site. Why would "pilotdave" indicate the name of my homepage, or why would it appear when they hold the mouse over an image?

    I believe we should have the option to separate our individual smugmug sites from the rest of smugmug (at least for pro accounts). The hello world and smugislands features are pretty much what I'd like to see, but in reverse. Those prevent our sites from appearing on the rest of smugmug. I want to prevent the rest of smugmug from appearing on my site. And if that was the case, you no longer need to display "pilotdave's photos matching..." in the search results, etc, because they're just confusing. Leave that stuff to flickr, where guests know they're seeing one user's page of a much larger photo community.

    Barb;
    I guess that's one way of doing it. What I really would like to do is keep the mouse over feature but have control over what shows up in the text bubble. In my case I wanted to display the caption of the photo. Is that possible?

    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Also, regarding captions; Is there a way to add or edit captions to multiple images at once?

    You can edit captions & keywords for an entire gallery at once.

    When you're in the gallery, use the photo tools drop-down (under the photo in smugmug style) and select Edit Captions/Keywords (Bulk).

    You can assign keywords and captions at the photo level, or you can use the box at the top of the screen to assign a specified keyword or caption to all (or selected) photos in the gallery.

    Hi Wayne,

    That will depend on what you have enabled in your gallery settings.

    If you disable photorank, then the thumbs will not show up.
    If you disable original and larges, those sizes won't shot up nor will the save photo icon.
    If you disable camera info, then the "info" icon will not show up.

    You can pretty much remove most things from the photobar. You can also remove the photobar completely if you wish with a power or pro account:

    O.K.
    Thanks for the reply.
    Here is what I really want to do.
    When I (or anyone else) mouse over an image, I want the caption to show without my nickname. That's it...
    I have seen this done on other sites. For example: http://www.katecrafton.com/gallery/2194196#114128493

    Thanks

    Hi Wayne,

    I guess I'm confused. Can you give us a link to where you are seeing this on your site? I don't believe I've ever seen someone's nickname included with the caption on a mouseover.

    I've just looked at random gallery on your site:

    and I can't see the behaviour you describe.

    Your homepage is indicated by "Home", not "pilotdave". Nor does "pilotdave" appear when you hover over an image.

    Barb,
    Most likely it's me thats confused.
    Here's a link to my gallery that wants to show my nickname

    http://ruhavingfun.smugmug.com/gallery/3224266

    PilotDave;
    The reason you weren't seeing any captions - I added the java script Barb suggested in FAQ #28. That just eliminated the whole thing. I removed the code and now the captions are back.

    The nickname is only showing in the above gallery.

    Yup... I changed my first name on file with Smugmug to "Home." That fixes my breadcrumbs issue, but causes a bunch of other problems. Like my search results show "Home's photos matching ___..."

    Don't know what my bank will say when I try to deposit a check made out with Home as my first name. I'm a long way from getting a check though! rolleyes1.gif

    Hi Dave,

    In the example link you gave, from katecrafton.com, she has her breadcrumbs hidden. That's why they aren't showing up in the text bubble (or at the top of the page). Is that what you'd like to do?

    Nope, I like the breadcrumbs. I just want them to begin with "Home," not my first name, last name, nickname, or a combination of those.

    I previously had my display name set to my nickname. So my breadcrumbs started with "pilotdave >." I believe that's confusing to visitors. Why does "pilotdave" indicate my homepage?

    On microsoft.com, they have a link to "microsoft.com home" on every page. If every page had a link labeled "bill gates" that brought you back to microsoft.com, you'd probably be pretty confused.

    I guess I'm just not able to make myself clear. I fully understand that what I want is not possible. This is a feature request. I just find it hard to believe that there aren't other pro users that might like a link back to "home" on their sites. I just don't want my homepage to be referred to by my name.

    The other piece of my request is that we have a way to isolate our site from other smugmug sites. You provide the feature I want in reverse... where smugmug.com will not link to my site. I don't care about that... What I want is for my site not to link back to other parts of smugmug. Again, it's just confusing to visitors of my site when they search for something on my site and have the option to search the rest of smugmug. They only know that they're on my site, and they're probably looking for pictures of themselves. They don't need a link to other people's galleries.

    Sorry for the confusion. I guess I was addressing Wayne, who opened this thread. He used http://katecrafton.com as an example and she hides breadcrumbs. :D

    On the topic of your feature request, basically you'd like to use a different word to represent your SmugMug homepage in your breadcrumbs? Without having the repercussions of that word showing up as your first name or as "that word's photos" in search results? Perhaps this can be done currently with fancy coding, but if so... I'm not aware of it. ne_nau.gif I'll pass along the request, but honestly I'm not sure we'll ever implement a nickname override for the purpose of breadcrumb display in galleries.

    Why not just use a navbar instead of being limited to breadcrumbs?

    Also, you mentioned having the search results link to other SmugMug photos. I wonder if the search box here: http://smugmug.com/help/customize-faq.mg #7 also behaves that way? Something to check out, at least.
