Nice set Ric. Glad to hear you're moving on. I can't believe anyone can shoot and post so many photos of the same thing or shooting location. eek7.gifrolleyes1.gifthumb.gif *0)

To me, it was a virtual cornucopia of birds. Unfortunately the light was not very good. Still, I was like a kid in the candy store with his mom's debit card!

    Thanks, Mike.:D

    Thanks, Harv.

In September, we are renting a loft that overlooks the Mississippi north of LaCrosse Wi. We will be pontooning about a 70 mile stretch that is mostly conservation area.

I'm going to buy the 400L DO IS for the trip...use it with the 1.4 TC and the 30D...and put my 300L f/4 on my 20D by itself.

I would say that sounds like a great setup. There is another option you may want to look at before you decide. I had considered the 400 DO at one time as well but went a different route... 300/2.8L IS. Take the time to read the review on the following link. It's done by the organization that reviews all Canon lenses and bring up a number of very good points.

    http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-400mm-f-4.0-DO-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

I have never been sorry I purchased the 300/2.8 even though I had the 300/4L IS at the time. It is very, very versatile and is second to none in image quality.

I'm not trying to sway you one way or the other but thought it would be a good idea for you to consider all aspects before making a purchase of that value, although you may have already done that.

If you remember my 'Loon on Six Foot Bay' post, all those shots were taken with my 300/2.8 and 1.4xTC, handheld. The same goes for my 'Mrs. Merlin' shots.

If you want to see some, I can also send you (or post) some 300/2.8 plus 2xTC shots. It handles the 2xTC superbly.

Believe me...I have researched this to the nth degree! I have no doubt about the 300...it is the best lens there is...period.

I hate tripods and endure mono pods.:D

It is a very difficult choice considering you can get the 300 plus a 2X TC for less than the DO.

In the end...I like to give weight to practicality. The DO is lighter and I can have f/5.6 at 560mm. I'm used to 420 at f/5.6 (actually I use 6.3 more than any other setting) so I think I will just have more reach and not really need to consider, or worry about what I should have done.

    I appreciate the input, Harv.:D

Ric, there is no doubt in my mind that you will make the decision that is right for your application and that you will put the gear to very good use. I look forward to seeing what you bring home from that trip as well as your impressions of the lens. Who knows, I may have to expand my arsenal. :D

rolleyes1.gifI think you would need very little encouragement to do that!

I just wanted to add...for me the experience is at least equal to, if not more important, to the quality of my images. My personal comfort is a very high priority. nod.gif

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Of course, we both know that the merganser was a much easier shot.
