CS2: Getting a max length on long side

Am I wrong or does PS documentation suck?
I need to be able to reduce/up-sample the photo to get a long side dimension, say 1600pxs regardless of the orientation of the photo. How can it be done manually? Can it be done in Batch? Can it be done in the image processor?
So far, I can only figure out how to do it in Batch if "I" predetermine the orientation and pick an appropriate macro. I tried using the "image size" adjustment under Image and it resulted in a stretched short side.
Feeling like a dope.

Canon 7D, 100-400L, Mongoose 3.5, hoping for a 500L real soon.

Enter 1600 two times.
It will use the image interpolation method from your prefs, so bicubic might be safest if you're going both ways.
