0-I have at the moment a Canon 400d and I currently use it with an 18-55mm and 70-300mm lens. I am about to get a Sigma 50-500mm lens. Will find a difference using a 20D 0r 30D Canon camera with this lens. Your replys will be more than appreciated. Thankyou.

I am currently testing an older Sigma "BigMa" 50-500mm (non DG).

It seems fine on both a Canon 350D/XT and 1D MKII. The 20D/30D are reported to autofocus slightly faster and that lens has the HSM focus motor, so you might see some improvement, but probably not too much.

The 1D MKII works very well indeed with that lens, especially if you add a 1.4x telextender. Not quite the focus speed of the Canon 70-200mm, f2.8L, but still quite good.

I don't think you need to upgrade camera bodies to support the BigMa. The 400D/XTi should be fine.

Of course there other reasons to consider the 20D/30D bodies, so if you want to upgrade, I won't stop you. :D

    I'm confused...lol

Umm... upgrade to the 20/30D? Well I think if you get a 20D you will first off be super disappointed with the smaller LCD. The large LCD on the 400D is SUPER nice and it helps usability a ton for reviewing shots. Yeah there are some other reasons you may want one, but I think you'll do fine with the 400D. Put your money in lenses!!!

Sorry, I don't normally answer individual e-mails unless it's something that has no application to the group.

To explain myself, the "BigMa" is not a particulalrly fast lens to begin with, and adding a 1.4x teleconverter just compounds the problem.

The Canon 1D cameras have greater autofocus sensitivity than the rest of the Canon dSLRs, and that extra sensitivity is needed using the autofocus or manual confirmation of focus above f5.6.

The !D MKII/MKIIN/MKIII also have faster autofocus processing which lends itself to USM and HSM focus motors.

The lens works just fine on the crop 1.6 cameras, with the advantage of additional reach without a teleconverter.
