DNG Support...where'd it go?

Hi guys,

It's been a few weeks since I uploaded any photos.

I work completely in the DNG format. The last time I uploaded I was able to upload my DNG files and those were converted to the appropriate JPEGS and my DNG was the "original" file.

This evening I tried to apply the same workflow, but I'm now getting error messages that DNG is not supported. Clearly, when I look at my few other albums I see that the originals were DNG.

So I'm just wondering what happened. Being able to just upload the DNG files I wanted to made my workflow easier because I didn't have to go through the process of converting and exporting the photos I wanted to add.

Did something change or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi, I don't know that we ever supported DNGs :)

Our officially supported files have always been jpgs. More, here:

    Hi Andy,

    Thanks for the quick response.

Here's a link to one of the photos. I was looking at the EXIF info and it looks to me that the original file was a DNG . Do you think I may have done the conversion to JPEG and the EXIF included in the DNG file name was copied into my JPEG converted file?

    I must be slipping... :)
    Thanks!

    Hi Andy,

Just thought I'd relay what I found...

I tried exporting my DNG using Lightroom 1.1 and also Photoshop Elements 5.0 to a JPEG and both exports showed the filename in the EXIF with the JPG extension.

I was scratching my head at this point...

...then I thought that I may have used the built in function in Photoshop Elements 5.0 to upload the files to SmugMug. I followed that process by selecting one of my DNG files and low and behold the EXIF information showed the filename with the DNG extension.

So I'm not sure what is happening with that method of export. Is it a back door way of getting DNG files up to SmugMug or do you think something is not getting handled correctly with the EXIF in the Photoshop Elements SmugMug integration?

    Thanks,

    Mike

Mike, it's a jpg, that file you linked above. You just gave it a .dng extension, but the file type is JPEG.

Here is your original, viewing in Adobe Bridge:

I believe that PSE5 converts it to a JPG automatically on upload.

I Ivar, thanks for the reply.

That makes sense, but I was still trying to figure out why when I do a manual JPEG export the EXIF information shows the file name with a jpg extension. When i do the PSE5 upload to SmugMug the EXIF information shows the DNG extension.

Here is one that I used the PSE5 upload to SmugMug feature:

Here is one that I manually exported to JPG and then used the IE upload feature on smugmug:

I'm guessing it probably doesn't really matter what the filename is in the EXIF other than I like to dot my I's and cross my T's so it's probably more of an annoyance for me that the EXIF filename doesn't match the actual file name.. I like the PSE5 upload because it pushes all my tags/keywords along with it. I'm guessing this is a 'bug' in PSE5....or they could say it's a feature so I can see what the real original filename really was. :)
