On the right hand side, there are links to blog communities under Blog Resources.
I just added these links about 3 weeks ago, and I have seen steady traffic after participating in the Blog Catalog community - it is the most productive one.
I have also submitted to some blog directories.
You need to be careful in joining or submitting to just any place out there though - there are a lot of "seedy" ones that you don't want to be associated with. It will damage your search engine ranking and reputation.
I know what you mean about seedy. I was exploring around last night and was going to subscribe to a forum supposedly about Siberian Huskies. After I got into the thing there was a bunch of porno!!!!
This is a great, useful, informative thread! I like to write as well and found that I get as much feedback on my blog as I do with my galleries. I'm looking forward to reading all the ones here. I somehow missed that Pete had one...!
benduki it's lookin' good... as well as your lovely Husky
Thanks!! I don't particularly like photos of myself so there aren't many publically floating around. The exception seems to be the Utah workshop last May where there were way too many cameras/photographers around for me to successfully dodge all of them. :giggle
I think my blog could use some sprucing (especially to match the banner on my site) but ever since I got it initially set up that's been on the backburner. Like discussed here, you either have time to tinker with technology or go out and take photos!
Well, you couldn't possibly dislike photos of yourself as much as I do!
but, I relate a lot better to a site when I have that connection. I think people want to know you and I don't think they are half as critical as we are. Look at old Andy. He's got his "smug" mug everywhere but it makes you feel like you know him doesn't it?:D
I hear ya on the tech vs. tending to business. I just hate this tech stuff. I consider it penance. The Internet is a tool for me. I only want to know what I need to know to get the job done. I'm a photographer for pity sakes!
Wonder of wonders... Miracle of miracles... Schmoo just forwarded me some links about bloggers.
I'm the blogging kind too. I have done it since 2001, back in the days where I called it an internet diary. So the first years are in dutch.
As I met an american man, married him and came to live to UK, I started writing in english, and since I started profiling myself as a photographer without blushing every time, I started putting in pics, and now kind of try to write every day. We do travel a lot, so there is lots of travel related blogging. I also blog if I do weddings, and my customers really like the fact that they can find their wedding day back on my blog. I pick the pics very carefully for those...
I love photoblogging, it is good for my almost non existing ego, and I love the groupies... Love the comments. They can make my day!
Anyway, you can find my blog in my signature.
It is a fact that you have to keep it up every day. If I dare not write a day, the reading numbers go back... Honest!
The secret to a successful blog!
I've been actively blogging for about a year now & today I've got over 300 RSS Feed subscribers (folks who sign up to read every post I make) and my client call volume has increased dramatically.
The key to sucessful blogging? Post. Write relevant, interesting content, and write it frequently. Every day is great, but a few times per week is just fine. You need to ensure that your posts are worth reading & spend some time on each article - I've been known to spend an hour or two or more on some of my more lengthy posts!
Also, you should encourage people to read & subscribe to your blog! It's not about being humble, it's about telling people that you're creating content worth reading & that you're damn proud of it! The more people who link to your posts & read your work, the higher up you go in the search engines, etc.
Also, make sure you are targeting an audience. Though I'm a photographer in Cincinnati, OH, I write posts that all photographers would be interested in & occasionally spice it up with some local happenings.
You've got your link in your signature and that's a good start. I've got mine there as well as links to a few popular posts. Make it easy for people to check out your work!!

That is my normal bit of time. Between an hour and an hour and a half.
I do feel handicapped because my native language is dutch. I lack english knowledge of certain expressions that I could easily write down in dutch.
Nevertheless, my blog is my child, and I love working on it. It does mean a lot to have people come back to read it on almost daily base.
Happy to learn that dgrin has more photography bloggers.
