I keep looking at this (still in awe, there is so much detail, color and mystery in this shot) and wondering how did you light all three cowboys so well? did you have strobes at multiple heights? It seems to me the top cowboys would be backlit even if you used a strobe on the main cowboy, given how well you exposed the sky. I'm stumped!

Wow! Yeah! I had to look at this again to see that! How did you do that? This is definately a keeper!! Great work!
My partner was shooting the "main" arena shots this time, so that allowed me the freedom to finally get some behind the shoots shots (no pun intended)
I was walking around taking pics of the riders getting ready & I was walking toward another good shot when I saw this in my peripheral vision. I backed up a few steps, composed the shot, and I'm pleased with the resulting image.
As to the how's:
About 7pm, so the sun was very low and shining on the cowboys from the direction of the shot. They were not back-lit.
Camera on manual - 1/250 f/4.5 ISO 200 (for ambient)
580EX set to ETTL with -1 FEC - not quite 45deg angle on flash head and white card pulled out (fill flash) -- this setup actually shot most of the fill on the upper cowboys, and the card bounced just the right amount onto the main subject. Got to love ETTL
Now for grins... This was shot with a "kit" lens (18-55mm)
I have taken many a good shot with this lens (I did not buy the kit, but purchased this lens separately, later)
WOW, how did i miss this one? This is great shot, love how well it's exposed, rich colors, contrast, composition, everything so well together. Thanks for posting

No... he was getting mentally prepared and I would not interfere with that. These guys play a dangerous game and need to be focused.
