Gallery stats not available on private galleries?

Just wondering. I have a gallery that is private that I use to put pics in for posting to dgrin and other message boards. Can I not get a stats for this gallery from the gallery page so I can see hits on each pic. The only reason I could guess was since it was on private the individual stats aren't there, but was wondering why?
