how to approach a magazine editor

I'm curious if anyone can give me advice on how to approach a magazine editor for work. I would really like to get into editorial work, and thought I would try to start with some small local publications in my hometown (Portland, OR). However, I have never approached a magazine editor before and have no idea what the protocol is for this. Do you try to make an appointment for an interview to show them your book, send emails with images, etc.?

I would really appreciate any advice.
