Rumor: Nikon D200 discontinued?

I was in a local camera shop earlier this week, and as is my habit, I asked if they had an D200's in stock and what they were charging these days. (I like to try and support local places if they aren't too far off of the prices I can get online.) Much to my dismay, the shop guy told me that he had none and that he had been told (off the record) that the D200 has been discontinued by Nikon and he shouldn't expect to get any more new ones.

Well, I immediately rushed home and tried to get some confirmation of this, but can't find any. It is out of stock or backordered most places, and given its age, this would seem to support the idea that they are terminating it.

I have been wanting one for a long time now, and had planned to finally pick one up in a month or two. Given this new information, the wife gave me the go ahead to get one now. I did manage to find one (from Cameta Camera, through Amazon.)

Just wanted to pass along the second hand information that I heard. I don't know that there is anything announced that would replace it in Nikon's lineup. I suspect that Nikon may be aiming at the lower end of the DSLR market right now, with the D40's/D80's.

The OP in this Nikonians thread heard the same thing, but then again many others replied to him that their well-informed local camera store heard no such rumor.

It sounds suspicious to me... a convenient rumor that salespeople can play when they don't have any stock. Did they try to recommend a different camera to you, or suggest buying elsewhere? That will be telling.

Hey I was wondering that myself! My husband said that he heard somewhere that they will stop making it too. Not sure where he heard it. I was interested in possibly looking at one myself. :(

No, they did not try and sell me anything else. The guy at the shop sounded a little dissappointed that Nikon was ending the D200 as well. He seemed quite convinced that it was really true. He expressed his dismay at Nikon getting rid of the D200 with no replacement yet announced. It is possible that Nikon is holding off on saying anything public until they can announce an upgrade or replacement.

    REPLY FROM NIKON:

    Dear Arthur,

The D200 is still in production and so I cant see it being discontinued any time soon. However anything is possible, we will not find out about it until Nikon Japan makes a formal announcement which has not been made.

    Thanks for using Nikon products!

So not a definative no......but at least they say it is still in production and Japan has not made any announcement yet.

In his own mind... I've seen that sales people can spin stories just to sell products, or at least try. Who really knows what his motives really were, but I don't believe most of these rumors till the company in question releases something in print...

This is not a new rumor and is one I've been believing. I first caught wind of it about 2 months ago, but it was in association with another rumor. Rumor was that Nikon has developed but is holding out on unveiling a D200x, which is a slightly improved model of the D200. The attached rumor was that the D200 was already discontinued but that they had a lot in stock, so there was going to be a slight price drop a few months delay for them to mostly sell off and then the new camera would be unveiled at the end of Summer with new production already underway. Mind you, this is no more substantiated than the rumor originally in the thread, but I have since caught wind of it from multiple sources and I have been watching the D200 run out of stock or go on back order all over the place. Oh, and the slight drop in price I was told was gonna happen happenned.

    got my D200 tuesday!
how's this... i've been going into camera stores kicking tyres about the d200 since it came out... it's never been in stock tho. so finally got my money together on tuesday, walked into a camera store and there it was... combined with a 18-200 VR... which is what i wanted.

the supply of d200's has always been short -- then plentiful.

anyway, not concerned about rumours any more. i have one! :ivar

Here is my marketing analysis. the D200 prices were cut first, to clear excess inventories in anticipation of a closing introduction date, this was the drastic pricing we saw earlier this summer, then as supplies began to dwindle, pricing was boosted to a level to slow sales, as well as prep for higher priced new models! now, they are selling it down to end inventories all together or close, so that at introduction, a minimum number of D200s to liquidate will exist. The D200 isn't going anywhere, but it may be reinvented a bit. It's really a pretty simple formula, it's 2 years old at end of this year, the product life cycle is nearing the end, D200x or D200s, whatever they choose to call it will happen. The D200 has been to successful to just end the line here. There is an extension coming, my marketing sense says so- :-) It may happen now, or it may be later, but I believe it is close as inventories begin to get scarce and especially as retailers such as Best Buy and CC run out. No stock at CC now, and I Believe BB is no different. It's not only out of stock, it's not listed as a product.

if you want a D200 that bad, go pick one up on ebay. or, wait till the next version D200s (or whatever) comes out and get the new one. or wait till the next version comes out and buy your D200 used at a lower price than its current retail price.

I agree with patrick, we'll be seeing a D200+ pretty soon from Nikon, and I'd assume its even better than the D200 (which will be no mean feat), so I'd just sit tight and see what happens.

    Cheers

    From a NikonCafe post
Nikon will make an announcement on 8/23 1PM JST in Tokyo.

    Two new DSLRs.

    D3
    - FX format (Full frame) 12Mpixel CMOS made by Nikon
    - 9 fps in FF mode, 11 fps in HSC mode
    - HSC is done at 1.5 crop factor (meaning DX size)

    - ISO 200 - 6400 with LO (iso100 equiv), H1 and H2 (iso 12800/25600 respectively)
    D300
    - DX format 12Mpixel CMOS (most likely same as D2X)
    - 6 fps and boost to 8 fps with power grip (no HSC mode)
    - ISO 200 - 3200 with LO (iso100 equiv), H1 (iso 6400)

D3 and D300 share the same AF system. 51 AF points. 15 of them are cross sensor.
Supports live view mode. Switch to contrast based AF in live view mode.

    Five new lenses.

    - AF-S 14-24/2.8 G
    - AF-S 24-70/2.8 G
    - AF-S VR 400/2.8 G
