I am going to be photographing a newborn on Sunday. I have a dark blue sheet... will that work to lay him on? Should I try to find a white or black sheet? I'm a fan of natural light, so I'll probably do a lot outside at the end of the day. Any suggestions for that? Any other type of "props" for a newborn??? (First time for me... obviously, HA).

Now... the picture! I am very happy with this one and wanted to share!! ;) C&C is always welcome!

I used a light color comforter recently that worked pretty well near a window with curtains drawn. Be sure to get in close and get details. My compositions were best when composing abstracts rather than trying to treat as a portrait. Skin tones are tough on infants, and BW or sepia seem to work well for me.

    Good luck!!

Depending on the temperature, I might suggest working inside with window light - if you can find a nice sized window with which to work. Nice diffused light - who could want more?

Scott's advice is right on. Find a big window, pull up a couch or chair near it, and drape your fabric over. For a teeny newborn, you don't need that much "clearance" around them.

This is a chocolate brown velvet curtain panel...traps the light much better than sheets, and doesn't wrinkle.

I love the image you shared, and I think everyone has great ideas for your baby portraits! I was nervous about my first baby, too, and he was actually a lot older. Good luck! I cant' wait to see what you capture.
