Hey all

Just want to share - my oldest (soon to be 17yr old) has been asked to go to Germany and try to catch on with a feeder team for a Bundesleague team. 3 weeks to start, and they are asking that he be willing to commit for the season (10 months).

He has worked pretty hard to be as good as he is, and while I am thrilled with the acknowledgement tht he is being offered, I am more thrilled that he has the confidence and guts to follow this dream of his.

wow - congrats to him clap.gif. And it's great that you're allowing/encouraging him to follow his dream (which is, to no small degree, now possible b/c of all the time and effort you put in to get him to that point).

    keep us posted.

    Thanks Colleen.

Good thing, really, that I haven't tried to calculate fees for training, tournaments, not to mention gas or hours of my time!!!

I've said all along 'all I can do is provide the opportunity to train and play. the desire and effort has to be driven by him'.

And, even if this is only three weeks, it will be three weeks that he wouldn't otherwise have.

There are thousands upon thousands of good soccer players but there are very few willing to put in the hard work or have the dedication to be great.

Congratulations clap.gif and good luck to your son.

    Congrats..

Even at 17 he is already behind..

My son had the same type of opportunity.. He decided to go to St John's University, NYC. One of the best college soccer programs ( always in the top ten)..

My advice, is talk to the coaches , find people who have been there.. and don't rule out a Big University.. But if his is good and determined (which he sounds like he is) then he has to find out things for himself.

This a a big decision.. and good luck to you and your son.. We'll be looking for more news from him..

    Hi Hank
    Thanks.
Yes, we know that most Europeans are in these programs long before 17. We actually aren't ruling out universities but rather hoping this will be a step in that direction. This program that he is going with has connections to several US universities. And, FWIW, he is not done high school yet - has another year. Which we are willing to have wait, as this opportunity is too big to let slip.

So this isn't an either or decision, rather just a step to test the waters, and see where it all leads.

I will update as it goes along - I have no real expectations and will not be at all disappointed if he decides to come back after the first week. He will have tried, and thus will not have anything to regret.

So, here is the update. He did not catch on with the first team he tried with, but did with the second team. He has decided to train with them until Christmas at least. He would like to return home to finish high school with his peers second semester. This will give hm some great experience, some great training and will reduce my grocery and gas bill by more than 1/5th!!!!

Well, the boy is back at home (landed at 7 p.m. today). He looks the same, perhaps a bit leaner and fitter. Says no one in Germany could get his wit (sarcasm) so has loads saved up for all of us!

He is planning on staying home but has been assured by the club that he is welcome to return after Christmas. He needs to be here to write diploma exams for the course he took by distance learning, and expects to attend second semester and graduate with his classmates.

It is -5c right now, and likely to get much worse between now and end of January. Wonder if that will influence his final decisions. (no snow, and 10C in Germany). Actually suspect it will be the calibre of the soccer that influences his final decision.

Still don't really know if anything more will come of all of this, but it doesn't need to as I think he has had a great life experience so far.
