Hullo all. Just thought Id stop in and check out how SmugMug is doing. Business good? No danger of it dissapearing at least, right?
I havent been using my account at all. I really dont like how long it takes to upload, despite my broadband cable connection (I know, I know; upload is always slower)... But I think I may get into it more now. Ive gotten over my perfectionist phase, pretty much. I was in a state where I didnt want to post or upload anything unless it was of the quality caliber of you guys with youre mega skills and equipment and such. But Im not that good, and I dont suspect Ill ever be, so Im just going to upload my special interest stuff on the gallery and use it as a workhorse for those different aspects of my life.
Im just glad its still going strong; at least I think as much.

Thanks for a great service; sorry I havent used it well thus far.

I use smugmug as a backup service. I upload all of my photos. The big advantage of smugmug is there isn't an upload limit. Throw them all on !!!

If (when) my hard drive crashes I will have backups available. If you're worried about perfect photos, just look at mine rolleyes1.gif .

Seriously, I have learnt an awful lot since joining dgrin and will continue to learn. Post a photo and accept the (constructive) critism. You will get better if you join in.

Whoa, wait a second... How do I delete a gallery?

Im just going to use this thread to ask general questions, since Ive never really learned how to use the site...

Can I set the profit margins on just a basic user account for photos on the different media forms offered?

How do I give someone a link to my gallery, from an external point of view (not a link directly into my account from my perspective)?

Is there a better way to upload photos to SmugMug? Like FTP or the like?

When you are logged in, go into the gallery. There are a row of buttons in the upper right portion of the page. One of those is "Delete Gallery".

No, only a Pro account can mark up prices and collect profit from that markup. A pro can mark up the price on any product we offer though, and collect profit on all of those items.

You only see the buttons and tools because you are logged in. The exact same pages appear different to your visitors. Just hit the logout button to see what they will see. So the best link to give them is just http://nickname.smugmug.com/ with your appropriate nickname.

11doh.gif Sorry for making such a noobish post. Now that I look at it, the only reason I probably didnt figurea all that out myself is that I was trying to do so at 1 AM after no sleep... Its all so obvious today, during normal waking hours. ;)

Now, talk to me about movies. I dont recalls eeing anything about movies in the instructions, other than that I can host them on smugmug. I need to host a movie to link to from another post in another forum... I bet Ill blunder into it first, though...

That doesnt tell me how to upload them though, and Ive already tried the standard method, but it was rejected on format. That just tells me I need to have my video files saved as mpegs, which they are. ;)thumb.gif

dewr, it's all in the help sections... look in the uploading section. you upload a video the same exact way you upload a photo. plain and simple, that's it. as long as the file type is supported, and the size is under 8mb, you'll be able to upload it.

And one other key distinction... you must have a Power User or Pro account. If you have a standard account, it will reject it on format (as they don't have the video option).

Ah. Didnt catch that part. I didnt see any specific movie FAQ menu or anything. I tried uploading the video in the same way I would still photos, but the clip is about 36mbs! It was shot with my f828, so that might be the reason for the huge file size.

Now I need to edit the damn thing down that much? Thats going to neuter it...
