camera option help?

i got a nikon d40 like a month ago...and i got two questions...

1. i want a flash..and i was looking at the sb800 but i dont feel like spending 350...will the 400 or the 600 still be a good flash?

2. i want to start doing night shots but i want a outer flash or lighting or something...i dont want to use the flash on my camera id like to get like a secondary light...(if i lost you ill try and explain further)

    Flash costs usually for a combination of features and output. Certainly, you can get by with a smaller flash. Just realize when it comes to throwing a lot of light, the smaller one might not be as good. It might take more time to cycle too.

    If you want, go ahead and consider one of the many alternatives. Like Sunpak or any of the other third part vendors. More bang for the buck. You can get the features you want for less money.
