I read another thread here that was asking about ftp and I thought I would suggest somthing that a few picture sites offer.
The ability to upload an unlimited number of pictures at once in a zip file. Then once the file is up, the server unzips it for you.

There are already two tools around for that let you upload an unlimited number of pictures:
Send-to-Smugmug (have a look at the hack-forum) and www.smugmugexplorer.com
+ if you like to script your thinks, there's also a python script written by Rutt. You'll find this one in the hack forum, too.

On the surface it is a great idea, but from a server perspective it actually doesn't work well.
Jpegs are nearly incompressable, so zip with jpegs would take same (and sometimes bigger) space, let alone all the time/resources to zip/unzip
When sending one huge zip file you increase the chance of the upload break and you'll have to resend the whole deal from scratch. If you send a 1000 of separate files and you's break on 1000th, you'd only have to resend that one. In case of zip, you'd have to resend the zip.
Sending a bunch of small files is much more reliable process than sending a single big one.

But the previous post about having to commit the 40gb of space on the server plus another 40gb temporarily to uncompress it would be a drain on the servers resources. But I doubt many people would be uploading 40gb's. My entire collection so far is only at 15 or 20gb's. But I agree this is prob enough reason not to offer the feature.
The system requirements to zip/unzip isnt that bad. :0) If your working on huge files, then your system should already be pretty powerful. My 700mhz notebook wouldnt be able to handle the zipping of 1gb to well, but it also cant handle 3mp pictures well in PS. My 2.4ghz desktop on the other hand handles them quite well, also zips pretty well. :0)
