A Few Hummingbirds

I think hummingbirds are one of the toughest to capture for me. Here are a couple shot with a 20D and the little Tamron 200-500.

I agree I've not had much luck catching the little bastards...sorry about the language but that is what they have been come to be known in my house:D

How many photographers does it take to change a light bulb? 50. One to change the bulb, and forty-nine to say, "I could have done that better!"

Image #2 was just luck, of course. The whole affair lasted less than 1/2 second - the little rascals are just faster than the eye.

But, there is a branch in my backyard where they can sit and guard the feeder - they believe it is theirs. So, if you are patient enough, sooner or later one will perch for a brief period.

Here is one on the perch - this is about 1/4 of a frame from a 20D at ISO 800

They are fun to watch hunting for the feeder when Nightingale takes it down to refill it.

These are great! I love the face-off in #2. You'd never think the little guys moved so fast seeing that photo. :D

How do hummingbirds fight? They're built so strangely I can't imagine any kind of offensive moves on their part.

Nice catches. What helps me get the hover shots is using a minimum of f/8 for some depth of field and setting the shutter on high speed continuous. I fire a burst and often one or two are in sharp focus.

These were shot at f7.1 Harv, and anywhere from 1/200th to 1/1000th

I agree that getting sufficient DOF and high enough shutter speed at a low ISO can be challenging in anything less than bright sunlight. These were shot in the shade, with fill flash.

Nice captures of a difficult subject. My hummer photos are way down this year. I am just not seeing many. That doesn't mean they aren't around, but so far, they have been few and far between.
