Hi everybody,

Any thoughts on either of these two (very similar) variations?

Thanks in advance for your comments!

I like the second one more than the first one. It's a nice solid photo, but it lacks pop.

Just to clarify - pop as in contrast, or pop as in subject?

The contrast is fine. Kinda difficult do describe it I guess. The way I try to gauge it is, if I was looking through a bunch of images, would something in this image grab me enough for a second look. Like I said it's a solid image with some interesting lines/patterns, but nothing grabs at you.

I think you might be talking about what many people call "Wow Factor".

The rear spocket area is a problem in the first from blur & blowout. Focus in that area is better in the second shot, though still looks blown.

I think you're onto a good idea, but more Wow Factor would help. I'd try some different angles, closer in. I don't think it's necessary to have both front & rear sprockets in the shot, and it would be a more powerful image if you could make one part into a simpler subject. You could try using the chain as a leading line, and maybe soften the light a bit, though I do like what you're going for with the lighting.

    Clear as mud?

I think the sweet spot is somewhere between the two.
