The first thing is the need for a protective filter is one of the constantly-raging debates you will find on most photo fora. Many people prefer to just use hoods. I straddle the line: I use a hood at all times and a filter when there is risk of something contacting the front element (harsh, windy conditions, toddlers present, animals with inquisitive noses). UV filters don't affect exposure--in fact they do very little on digital cameras since there alreay is a UV filter built in. For film there filters were mainly for high-altitidue shooting to reduce the blue cast you get.

Whe nyou get a filter, get the best you can. Consider that you spent time researching lenses and got the best lens for you needs that your budget allows. Why cheap out on the filter now?

So, that said, get a multicoated filter. The coatings are there to reduce reflections, which is one of the main agruments against using them. Generally B+W and Helipoan are considered the top filters, followed by Hoya. You can find B+W for very reasonable prices at www.hvstar.com if you can wait a week or so for gratification.

I spend the extra buck on the hoya shmc filters... if anything they wont do ANYTHING other than protect the front of the lens. I shoot in very dusty areas and I feel a lot better about brushing dust off a $50 UV filter than a $1100 lens.
