Slow to load

I often experience slow access to my site, and sometimes, no access. As of the past few days, I've had the worse access in a long time, and it's not just my site. I've even tried accessing Andy's site and I have the same trouble there.

So I am wondering is it me or the SM servers? Do other people have slow access or am I not doing something right?

I am on Verizon DSL and when I run their infospeed.verizon.net speed test, I get readings of 1M (1098) download and 137 Kb upload, so I don't think he issue is with my DSL service.

Next, I am running WinXP Pro that has all it's shots to date. Windows Pop-up blocking feature is turned on. I am also running the Windows Defender program. I use Windows IE, ver 7.0.5730. Last night, I dumped everything in my Cache, (temp files, cookies, history, everything)

I'm running Avast Anti-Virus which seems to be running fine and is also up to date.

The galley I've had the worse luck with of late is a new gallery I posted this weekend. http://wynkoop.smugmug.com/gallery/3361646#187559871

My browser has been on this gallery while I've been typing this post and as I type, I'm seeing 15 thumbnails, but no larger photo on the right! It looks like the system just died! Usually what happens is I'll get the first image to appear on the right, but clicking on any other image in the gallery fails to load on the right.

The last bit of information I can offer is that when my site loads, I do see some error messages on the status bar on the lower-left of the screen. When I double click on the Yellow Yield sign with the ! mark, it tells me the following errors:

Line: 2
Char: 28
Error: Expected ";"

Line: 203
Char: 138
Error: Expected "}"

Both the above errors are from:
http://wynkoop.smugmug.com/gallery/3361646

I'm done. I tried to give as much info as I can to help troubleshoot the problem, if there is anything I'm missing, let me know.

    Correction
    The first error code,

    Line 2
    Char: 28
    Error: Expected ";"

    is actually from my homepage.

The second error is from the noted gallery.

Try turning off your Avast - just temporarily - some of these programs are cause so much slowness :(

I had Norton on a test box a couple weeks ago, and it slowed down my browsing by 50%. I'm not kidding.

Can you re-verify if you get that page error on your site please?

Error is gone... You had an error in your customizing -

rightClickWarning = "Photos are property of Tim Wynkoop Photography. All rights reserved. Unauthorized use is prohibited."

you were missing the red part. I fixed it for you.

One problem fixed, site now not loading at all?
    Andy,

The issue I had with the error message has been fixed, "thank you" very much.

I turned of my Avast to see if the system would run faster, but now it's not loading my site at all!

You might have other blocking or firewall software that is preventing access to www.smugmug.com?

    Hackthis?
Would you like me to post a "Hackthis" report for you to review to see what I have going on? I'm about ready to give up.

    Hi Mort,

Hmm, Avast still definitely had a big presence in your running applications during that report. This definitely seems like a case of over-security. We typically see this kind of behavior when more than one firewall is running. Can you check your Windows Security Center to see if Windows Firewall is turned on? Also, if you're using a router, it likely also has a firewall built in. Can you let us know about that?

The best thing you can do to help us troubleshoot this, is very temporarily disable your security software and try to access the site, then reenable each peice one at a time to see which causes, or which combination causes, the slowdown and inability to display pages.

I've disabled my Windows Firewall since I am on DSL, and still no improvement. Not sure if the modem might be the issue, as I've often thought my speeds weren't what they ought to be, but it is a Westell B90-36R5 15-01, Rev: F. I've had this modem since I first got DSL, way back when. Might a newer modem provide better speed?

It could - ask your ISP - but one thing to also try is please unplug your modem and your router and then replug them in - and also restart your whole system and try again?

    Thanks Andy,

    Been there, done that.

Will call Verizon and see if they'll send me new modem. Been customer of their's so long, they owe me an upgrade, IMHO! Laughing.gif.

    Still having big problems! Urgh!
I've been at this for a good part of the day, far too long for my liking, and while I consider myself a patient person, I'm growing tired and frustrated. I've tried to address this problem through this thread and here: http://dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=69755. I've yet to resolve my not being able to consistantly get on my own site, and if I do get on, be able to browse photos. The problem has been growing worse over the past few days, and at it's worse today. It was slight to moderate before that.

What concerns me the most is that if I have this much trouble getting onto and around my own site, what are my cash-paying customers getting when they try and log-on??? How many people stop trying to view and buy photos and just leave, never to come back?

I have contacted Verizon DSL support and they are sending me a new DSL modem, as the one I have is the original modem I started with in 2001.

The part that puzzles me the most about all this is why do I just have this problem with SM and not other sites???

Forgive my ranting, I have faith in the SM help folk, but I long to finally find out what it blazes name is giving me trouble.

I can't find another person that has any trouble viewing your site. It's most definitely something on your end, your computer.

Can you try a friend's home? Or the public library? Any other computer that isn't the one you are having trouble with?

Let's see what the new modem does once I have that installed. The only other thing I can think of that I haven't tired yet is removing the router and connecting directly to the DSL modem. Will update this thread with any findings once I get the bug worked out.

    Thanks for your help today.

    Hi again, Mort,

Please do let us know when you get the new modem in. Your broadband connection does seem pretty outdated at 1mbit down (Most are now 3mbit, many 6) and upload speeds of 137kb (which is ~20k/sec at top speed), but still should be quite sufficient for viewing under normal circumstances.

We also had a look at your page, and you had a considerable amount of errors in your customization that our customization goddess Barb helped me to fix. Have another look at your page and let us know if you see any more odd errors, and if the viewing experience has improved any for you.

We'd also like to have you run some tests after your new modem comes in, but some of the results may be revealing including your IP, so we would prefer to handle that through the helpdesk at help@smugmug.com

We're determined to get you fixed up, Mort! Don't get frustrated. Let us do the work.

What a day this has been.

Received my new Westell 6100 DSL modem from Verizon today. I think generally speaking, I have better speed than I did before. However, it didn't fix my Smugmug access problem. Not much changed from not being able to browse my photos in any gallery. Thumbs would show up on the left, but the larger images on the right never show up.

Coincidently, I also purchased a Palm Treo 700wx from Verizon Wireless yesterday and added their Data plan that allows for broadband access. I used my new PDA with the Data Plan on both my desktop PC and my laptop pc, and magically, I don't have a problem with SM anymore! I can get onto my site and browse galleries freely and easily! That my friends, is the good news. At least I know the problems I've been having are all on my side of the fence and not on my potential customers side.

So, all that being said, I only have two more things to troubleshoot. The first is a direct PC connection to the new DSL modem, and second, having my networking cables tested for continuity. The only thing left that might be causing my problems would be my Netgear router.

I feel like I have been chasing the mouse through the pipes and I've finally got him cornered. Like they said when the proverbial cat got his tail caught in the lawn mower.... "It won't be long now!"

Thanks to all the SM support folks for bearing with me as I work this problem out once and for all. Will report back again once I find the weak link.

After a long time of trial and errors, I finally caught the mouse. Eliminating nearly all other possible aspects of my connection, I started looking at my networking and my Netgear WGR614v2 router. The long story short, I upgraded the routers firmware and the slow connection problem went away. I am now able to get onto my Smugmug site with no problems at all! Yippie Yahoo!

Thanks to Andy and the rest of the support team for being my punching bags as I tried to figure this all out.
