I'm going to ask one of those annoying, pedantic questions.

What constitutes a macro? What isn't a macro?

    No, Skippy, I'm serious!

I've seen lots of shots posted over the years that people call macros that don't seem like they are to me, they just like rather close shots. What's the tipping point for when a shot moves from being really close to being a macro?

Most folks would call a shot that is 1:1 or higher - life size on the image plane - as a true macro image ( rather than a marketing mavens's "Macro" lens that shoots nice close ups but not true 1:1 ratio)

Thanks Skippy, once summer gets to us (yippee wings.gif), we can also start putting up stuff.

For DavidTo: I would say any shot where you have tried to show detail of something small (not necessarily 1:1, but close) - our mod will have to decide mwink.gif

Whilst many definitions of macro seem to revolve around 1:1 magnification, that does not work very well in practice. Most macro shooters do not use their lens at 1:1 all the time and the definition applies to image size on the sensor not "print magnification". An example would be someone shooting in macro mode with a P&S camera which do not normally go higher than 0.3:1 will produce a print magnification the same size as a 1:1 lens on a 1.6 crop camera at the same print size. The print magnification of a FF (35mm) camera with a 1:1 macro lens will be 1.6X smaller than a 1.6crop camera at the same print size.

The working definition of macro I prefer to use is that it should show detail not visible to the naked eye when viewing the image as a print or image on the PC screen.

Most macro forums do allow close up shots than even fall outside the latter definition and it does become a matter for for often arbitrary decision as to whether they should be allowed under macro or be included under the nature section. Examples would be many flower shots, dragonflies, butterflies, leaves etc.

    This is great,

I just add to my bag the MP-E 65 and the 180 L, some creasy stuff that comes out on the monitor after words, tone of fun and now I have a place to show it off, well no so fast, first I got to get the heng of it, not easy with the MP at 5x.

BTW. can we have a "MACRO" on the category choices?

    ciao

    That elusive definition of "macro?
    Skippy,

Does that mean that shots taken with a microscope do NOT belong in Holy Macro?

Even if so, me no worry: I now have a Nikon D200 with several lenses--including macro. Digesting how to use the camera seemed daunting at first, but with my experiences with the long-gutted Nikon E5400 (remember the Sony CCD image sensor scandal I whined and snivveled about some time back?), I'm jazzed and ready to go...

    ...tomorrow.

    I think.:D
