It is very rare to get that close to one. Great job. I bet your heart was racing getting that close.
I see them all the time on telephone polls. They always spook when getting within 50 yards. I spotted one and it "allowed" me to get within it's space. For a span of an hour, I took close ups and even got see it make THREE mouse dives. I could hear the flap of it's wings as it flew overhead and the thud of it's body when it hit the ground. I have one pic in which it flew by me and you see the red blood of the mouse on it's beak as it goes for another dive. It was an experience.
Two day later, I saw the same hawk and it allowed me to take more pics. :ivar

I can see from your account that you really enjoy nature...so do I. As I have said before...the experience, to me, is just as rewarding...if not more so than the photos. Getting a good shot is just icing on the cake.
Outstanding captures Ric. Your seem to be working well with your new gear.

Great Shot Ric !! They don't hang around very long, usually never when you're that close.

The 400 DO and the 1D MIIn are getting lighter all the time. Gotta train those muscles!
Thanks, Big Al!
