Sure there would be some quality differences maybe but not to the tune apple sing.
You might be surprised. I had a Rio back in the day. Talk about crap, much harder to use than my ipod.
I also don't think you're looking hard enough... do the "generics" do video? If so, what format? will they work with iTunes? I'm telling you, iTunes is worth every cent (well, its free, but afaik, only really works with ipods, right?), talk about a great piece of software to organize/download/convert/rip music and videos
edit: No, iTunes only works with iPod. And I thought this was mainly for the girl, to watch video? none of those little generic players will do video like an ipod, check the screen specs, if nothing else. might as well make little shadow puppets with your hands.
Ive been comparing the apple range against the generics....i can believe apple manage to sell any. Talk about paying for branding.

Gus, you were asking about a cool player, not a cheap one. iPod is the cool one. The rest are the cheap ones. Both good ways to go, but you know me, I stick with Apple for the seamless integration. On a PC, however, you could save a bit and get a different player.
glad you waited huh? hahaha! just made the choice more hard, you said? lol.
btw, you know that the first or second quarter of next year, they'll have a 16 GB iphone, I mean, 8GB, come on, you can buy a CF card with more than that!
However, You should just get the iphone, unless you want the storage, if you're even thinking of the ipod touch. I've had the iPhone since the minute it went for sale in N Louisiana (I was 8th in line!! hahaha! I am SUCH a nerd!!!!). It's an awesome gadget, a definite recommendation. however, now that I have $100 store credit (thanks to steve) to the apple store, I'm definitely getting the 80GB ipod CLICK WHEEL....cannot WAIT till they send us (primary iphone buyers) our store credit!!!!! : )

P.S. - the itunes wifi store is almost worth the ipod touch or the iphone alone, I love that feature, that will change so much and make things much easier. I'm looking forward to it!

It's the same as in photography...Opteka just ain't the same as Canon L. The drop-off in quality with the generics is dramatic. You'll certainly save money, but you won't get the quality build, performance or lifespan of an iPod.
For me, the iPod is worth every single penny. I have owned one of the larger size units from every generation and they all served admirably. Even my 10Gig first generation works as good as new.
I have used iPods with PC and Mac and never had a problem on either platform.
As for iPod "classic" versus "touch" the choice for me is simple. 75GB of music and video won't fit on 16GB. Bring on the 160 baby!

There were issues with the older iPod batteries, but they have been fine
for quite a while now. And the battery life is insane, these days. 40 hours
in the 160 gig Classic! Wow.

Huh? The iPod and iTunes have exactly the same functionality on a PC as they
do on a Mac.

Sure. True. But I'm not going to be running one of those other players on my Mac, but if I was cheap and had a PC I might.

Oy.
iPod has the same functionality on PC and Mac. The others don't. That's what I'm saying, and have been saying. I'm agreeing with you, dammit!
