Still Trouble with Logging on Website

I've asked for help with this twice before (spring & summer). Andy tried, but didn't know the answer, and no one else volunteered. I searched for the previous threads, but couldn't find them, so here's yet another.

The deal is that I cannot log onto my SM site with FireFox (ver 2.0.0.6). I'm given the message that I've logged on, but when I return to the home page, I'm really not. Refreshing the page doesn't help.

With IE7, the same thing occurs, except that refreshing the page does the trick and I can then access everything.

I'm wondering if it's something with the FF version, maybe from an upgrade?

I'd love to regain access with FF (it used to work great), but I'm clueless and will need some help from SuperGeek. Pl-e-e-e-e-z :bow.

Thanks!
Dane

rolleyes1.gif I'll help, but I'm not sure I am, or want to be associated with SuperGeek. (Except if it comes with a cool suit and cape, Superman style :D)

So, let's check the basics. First, you are using your nickname.smugmug.com domain to log in, correct? You can't use your custom domain: http://www.smugmug.com/help/acctlogin

Thanks, Ivar! I don't have a Cape to offer, but I will assume you can fly and walk on water if you can help me clear up this little, but annoying, problem!

I've tried logging in both ways (custom and nickname), and neither works with FF (though both used to). Both work with IE7.

The URL I just tried is http://www.drdane.smugmug.com/

PS where can I get an expanded selelction of emoticons, like ear.gif?

Do you have cookies allowed? You can test it here.
Start the test, and click on 'test' next to the first line.
Do the test, and the page will get back to you with a pass or fail.

For the smilies, try the 'more' link, under the basic set:

a lot of smilies are easy to remember because of the name. Some are named after people around here. type a colon followed by the name and the smiley will show.

PS, something probably unrelated, but something has happened to your Customization code; A bunch of extra spaces all over the place:

Wow - a tiny peek at the inner workings of logging on - only scratching the surface, I'm sure. My browser passed all four tests. What's next?

Go to my page (http://ivar.smugmug.com/) in FF, and look in the bottom right corner. You should see a Pi symbol there (yeah, okay, so I am a SuperGeek for those who know the reference).

Click on that, and log in. You should return to my page. Go to your page afterwards. Does that work correctly?

Do you mean the math "Pi" like the symbol for 3.1416? All I see is a "q" in a circle, page rank bars, the Tidy triangle, and a green circle with a check mark inside (leads to a search box).ne_nau.gif

Yep, the mathematical Pi. Ludolph van Ceulen was the first one to calculate Pi with 35 decimals. He is buried in a Church in Leiden. A few years ago, there as a new grave-stone, with a whole big ceremony. A lot of famous mathematicians, Prins (king to be) Alexander was there, etc. Big thing. I was there as well....
I'm not helping my not-so-supergeek-image here, am I?

I think you are looking just a bit too high. It is on my page itself, only in FF, not visible in IE.

That was cool about the Pi Guy! I don't think I learned about him in math.

I clicked on it, which took me to the SM login, went back to your page, but couldn't tell if I was "logged in" or not.

Went to my page and logged in, but got the same scenario . . . :cry

After you have visited my page, and logged in through the Pi, my page reloads. What happens if you go to your page after wards? Are you logged in?

" Went to my page and logged in, but got the same scenario . . . :cry" This means it gives me a "you're logged in" message, but when I go back to my home page, or another page on my site, I am not logged in, even after reloading the page.

This occurs if I wait 10 sec to be directed back, or click one of the directive links myself.

I'd invite you over to take a look, but I guess you're living in Europe.:D

When you login, and get back to your page, just refresh the page in your browser. You'll see that you're logged in.

    It's a custom domain thing

    Sorry Andy -

"when I go back to my home page, or another page on my site, I am not logged in, even after reloading the page."

Refreshing the page doesn't do it with FF, whether I'm trying to log on to my custom domain or SM domain site.

I'd like to finally get this handled. Do you guys actually let Ivar go home at night? eek7.gif We were on a roll.rolleyes1.gif

Ivar is in The Netherlands. So he's asleep now.

    Let's start from scratch.

    1. go to www.smugmug.com and click logout.
    2. go to www.smugmug.com and click login
    3. after login click "your photos" at the top of the screen
You should now be on your site, logged in. IF you don't see your controls, etc, then refresh the page.

Tell me your results from doing this, please?

    1. Couldn't do this because the only option when I arrived on the page was to Login.

    2. Done it

    3. Did this, too - still not logged in, even after refreshing the page.

3A. Logged in on SM.com again, but let it sit for 10sec to see what would happen. It brought me back to www.smugmug.com, where I was not logged in. (:deadhorse)

Got any other tricks up your sleeve?:D

Dane - are you running ANY addons with FF? If so, disable them. Keep trying.

OH and you must have cookies enabled for FF.

One more thing - you could try reinstalling FF.

    Hi, Andy

    Well, I disabled the 4 add-ons = no change

    Cookies were already enabled.

I uninstalled and reinstalled FF = still no change. I tried logging in a couple of times, but no luck. headscratch.gif

It seems odd that FF works fine on dgrin, but not smugmug . . . Maybe there's a clue there?

Could you ask one of the resident web wizards to see if they can help any further?

Dane, it's got to be a FF quirk on your end. We can't replicate.

Somehow, your cookies are not working.

Are you sure you are logging in and out from www.smugmug.com ?

I've tried logging in from smugmug.com, plus drdane and inner-light-images - none of them work - and I throw in a page refresh to boot.

Ivar had me do a test for cookies, which said they worked OK.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled FF, and then upgraded to 2.0.0.7 with no change in the problem.

One other thing I can do from this end is to find someone else with FF and try to log on with their machine. If that works OK, it would certainly point to something in my system. So I will go to work on that, and get back to you in this thread with the outcome.

    Hi Dane,

Are you manually typing in the password in FF? Or are you having FF autofill the password? If so, make sure it is correct. If you have entered it incorrectly before, or if you have changed your password after you have saved it it can be autofilling the incorrect password.
You should be able to see your password when you go to Preferences > Security > Show passwords.

If that is not it either, I'm starting to run out of ideas. I've never seen this problem before, nor can I replicate it. Do other passwords on other sites work fine?

What you could do, is sign up for a new trial account on www.smugmug.com and see if you can set up an account with a working password? Let me know. Don't sign up and pay for it, just see if you can create one that will allow you to log in/out on FF.

It was Options>Security>. . . on my version. Smugmug was not listed there. There is an autofill, however, and I've tried entering manually a few times, and scrutinized the auto version for errors. (my near vision isn't the best).
If that is not it either, I'm starting to run out of ideas. I've never seen this problem before, nor can I replicate it. Do other passwords on other sites work fine?

Other passwords & sites work OK.

I had my daughter log on to my site with her PC using FF, and it worked fine. So I'm thinking of uninstalling FF, purging all cookies & web files, and reinstalling. Do you think that might help? Is there anything else I could do during this process that might work (like dump other stash files)?

What you could do, is sign up for a new trial account on www.smugmug.com and see if you can set up an account with a working password? Let me know. Don't sign up and pay for it, just see if you can create one that will allow you to log in/out on FF.

I'll try this if the idea above doesn't pan out. Thanks for the other ideas, Ivar - I appreciate you hanging with me on this! If we can't find a solution, I'll just forget it and use IE when I need to work on the site. I thought it would be something simple.rolleyes1.gif
