Sizing Pics For Mugs

I've read all the FAQs, and can't make sense of the image size needed for mugs.

When I try to size an image to meet the pixel dimensions required for mugs, the pictures are horribly distorted.

There must be something basic I am missing.

Anyone who has had success with mugs willing to help a befuddled smugger?

This ratio worked great for a 15" mug.
2258 x 929
I think it only missed full wrap by a 1/4".
