Quantam seems very pricey but worth it. Anyone know of an off brand that does a great job?

I usually hunt thru EBAY for used QUANTUMS and have them rebuilt if needed by ALLPAK Battery Service....last rebuild was only like $25 or so......a ton cheaper than going thru Q. for almost $100.....I have never had a problem doing this.......and the Q1 packs still running strong after about 5 yrs of use......

I built my own for about $20 and love it. Have never run out of juice on a shoot yet. I saw a how to on the Internet and basically copied it. The battery itself is an emergency lighting battery from Home Depot that was like $8 or so. I wish I still had the link and I would post it here. You could try Googling it.

Sorry Jim, I tried a bunch of different search strings to see if I could locate the link you refer to. Can you give a few more hints like is there a current limiter in the circuit? What is the voltage and capacity of the battery you used? What flash units is the battery supposed to work with?

    Thanks,

There was an article in Shutterbug around 15yrs ago giving detailed instructions on a diy batt forthe vivatar 285hv and I also used 6 volt emergency exit light batts.....I had no limiter and no switch a plug between battery and flash....I never ran out of juice as long as battery was good......but I did find out the hard way that snoopy relatives can cause tons of damage, when they open batteries and pull your contacts (2 small brass house hold fuses) out and then put back in reversed.......my 285hv grenaded....i had heard of that happening but never wanted to experience it and sure do not weant to again..................but talk about fast recycle times OH man they are fast.....
