How do you make your Avatar images so small?

Despite the fact that I sit at a computer all day, I seem to be unable to create an 80 by 80 avatar image that is less that 50,000 bytes. The limit is 20,000 and everybody else seems to have figured it out... what am I missing????

    save it as a gif
or save it as jpg with level 6 or 7 compression.

better yet, choose "save for web" which removes the exif etc and will give you the lightest weight file...

OK...I'm sure someone else will jump in with the actually method you need. I use PSP8 and the compression is implemented during the file save. Sorry, I'm a limited with PhotoShop.

yeah, I still can't get it below 37,000 even when I cut the icon out of the preview, and I've even tried indexing it, maybe it's a MAC thing, it probably is attatching a resource fork and a whole bunch of other stuff I don't need. Are you using a Windows machine? Maybe I'll try my co-workers PC thanks for the tip...
