Great Egret & New Nikkor 18-200 lens

Well I got my new 18-200 Nikkor lens last week, and finally got to take it out for a spin and compare it to my tamron 28-300. I gotta say, it rocks! So much more clarity than I had expected. Would like a little more range but this fella was letting me get quite close so it didn't matter too much

Pretty good shots here. I don't normally think of the 18-200mm as a birding lens. It's just too slow and not long enough.

Watch the highlights on these white birds. It can really be a challenge on bright sunny days. You did a great job holding onto the whites in the first one.

Thanks. Yeah, at this stage it is my only lens and it is a bit of a jack of all trades for me. I want to get one in the future for birding, but will have to make do for now. And yeah, I was surprised at how blown out a lot of the shots were, but that's to be expected with white birds I guess. Anyway, I am pleased enough.

Subject is centered, which is usually a no-no...but it works for me in this shot.

Congrats on your new lens! Egrets are always fun to shoot!

Nice series and congratulations on the new lens. At that length you can still take great shots, but you will have to work on a few stealth moves. When I first started birding, I used a 70-200mm for quite some time.

Thanks. Yep, I was working hard at stealthing it yesterday for the first hour or so! The small egrets managed to hear/see me and fly away very quickly. After a while he was used to me enough to let me chase him quite openly though, nice bonus.

Great shots. It's a great lens to have, especially if you don't want a lot of gear and want to move around in stealth mode. It doesn't specialise in bird photography, but it does just fine. I shoot birds, sports, portraits, everything with this lens. I like the shot I get instead of the one I miss and this lens is great for that.

Well I am pleased with it so far, but am missing the little extra reach that I had with the tamron 28-300. I guess I'll get used to it though. The images are certainly a lot crisper.
