Slow?

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like my two smugmug sites have been running rather slowly for the past while. Whenever I click on it, work on it, etc. it is sometimes rather slow - more than in the past. So slow that I often have to refresh in order for my page to come up. I am worried potential clients may have difficulty as well, and may not pursue further as a result. Is it just me?

    Hi -- it's not just you. :-}

Up until yesterday, I was experiencing slow load times both at work and at home. It's better now, or at least consistently better.

I started a [thread=71501]thread[/thread] about it, and encourage you to post the top of your traceroutes from (http://www.smugmug.com/homepage/traceroute.mg) there to see if we can figure out any patterns or common places where there may be slowdowns.

Additionally, SmugMug support will tell you to run a speedtest at http://smugmug.speedtest.net/ but in all the cases I've run it I've gotten lightning fast results. So I don't know how useful that data really is.

If SmugMug actually took some action that improved things for me, I'd like to hear what it was. At least it would acknowledge that there was something, not just "random Internet slowness" that was at fault. Because every other site on the Internet I hit during the time of SmugMug slowness was plenty fast, including a thumbnail gallery on another site with exactly the same photos (actually, with larger thumbnails) that loaded *faster* than SmugMug.

    Can we get a traceroute?

Try these instructions to run a traceroute on a PC:
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/2959046
That will help us see if and where any problems may be.

To run a traceroute on a Mac, follow the instructions here:
    http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3073291
Copy and paste the results to us in an email.

Also a line quality test and speed test:
    http://dgrin.smugmug.com/gallery/1100284
scroll to the bottom for the how-to stuff.

This will help us diagnose the problem you are having right now, thanks!

It says for my line test my IP is unpingable. I really do not want to mess with my router. Anyways, the area where it is really acting slow is the creating new galleries. The upload speed is a tad slow too, but nothing like the creating new galleries.

I've found problems switching large groups (30 or more) between galleries. Its grinding me and my promises to clients right into the wall. headscratch.gif Upload speeds are decent but always a bit slower than other services like it.

    Thanks.

    Any help would be great...

The response from Smugmug (& Dgrin) was really awful this morning (8 hours back), but seems to have settled down now.

BTW, when are you guys going to try and find/implement a non-flash speed test (I still hate flash)?

I'm so sorry about that. Seems to us that you are in the minority here, flash is in use in like 99% of computers worldwide ne_nau.gif

I wish I had a better answer for you bigal, I really do :cry

Ugh. How many times do I have to click refresh to get things to work...:bash
The words "waiting for www.smugmug.com" on the bottom of my screen are becoming burned into my screen...
It doesn't seem to happen for any other sites.
