Regular backpack with SLR pocket?

So my question is this. My Mom was recently given a D40x with 18-135kit on it. (It was my grandfathers backup for a trip to alaska, and he offered it to my mom) She doesn't feel like carrying a seperate camera bag, but I told her it probably isn't a good idea to just put the camera in a regular backpack without some protection.

Does a backpack exist that has space in it for an SLR with small zoom on it, and then the rest ofit is a regular backpack? She wants something she can carry the camera in, and then be able to fill the rest of the pack with other stuff (wallet, food, clothes, other stuff for hiking or day trips while on vacation) I tried searching around but haven't found anything that jumps out at me, so I hought I would appeal to the infinite well of knowledge that is the DGrin user base!

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I did some more searching and found this: LowePro Orion Trekker II

Does anyone have this pack?

The Tamrac Adventure series might just fit the bill!

Hmm, thanks for the link. I think either the Lowepro or Tamrac versions would work. The one thing I like about the Lowepro model is that the bottom section comes off and you can use it as a belt pack. Pretty handy!

Check out the Crumpler Bags. They are well-loved by dgrinners.

The crumpler bags look amazing. I'm quickly outgrowing my slingshot, and will likely pick up and crumpler as my bag for carrying all of my stuff at once.

Yeah, those crumplers do look nice. THe bad thing is that at 3 times the price they are a bit more than she is looking to spend. For my next bag though... mwink.gif

ThinkTank also has a couple of models, IIRC. You have a few choices. I thnk you can also get either a TT or Kinesis padded insert separately & put it into a regular pack.
