Pentax PEF vs DNG

The almost single aspect of the Pentax K10D that I am disappointed in is the amount of noise in low light conditions and at higher ISO ratings (i.e.800 and 1600). That seems to be well documented in the reviews that I've read.

I have been shooting DNG in order to eliminate yet another piece of software from my process. While trying to save a very noisey photo recently I tried out Pentax photo lab and found that it did a better job of eliminating noise than PS Raw - I'd like to know why.

I don't know what is really different between PEF and DNG. I am wondering if shooting in PEF might result in less noise.

Any one?

As far as I know, there is absolutely no image quality difference between pef and dng. pef is compressed though, and I use it for that reason alone. The k10d's Dng files are almost twice the size of pef's.

One of the earlier firmware upgrades supposedly helps the noise issue. I don't shoot in low light very much, so I can't say how true that is.
