Uploading issues - possible due to poor network connection

Hi folks

We are having problems uploading photos from our office in Armenia even though exactly the same photos upload just fine from here in Brussels. In both cases I was controlling the uploads so I don't think that it is 'finger trouble'.

If we use 'Send to Smugmug' it looks as though the photos upload ok but then we get an message back saying 0 of 4MB uploaded and the upload log says that the files were empty.

If we use the 'Simple uploader' to send a couple of files then what I see is that we get to about 1MB on each file and then the upload starts again.

My guess is that our Armenia office has a poor or dodgy internet connection that is causing the upload to drop.

If it helps we are trying to upload to http://miseast.smugmug.com/gallery/3555654 and a tracert from our Armenia office looks like:

My questions then are does this look like a connectivity issue and if so is there another uploader you can suggest that might work better under these conditions. We use 'Send to Smugmug' and the simple uploader from other locations with no problems so I doubt it is an uploader problem.

Thank again

Richard

    Hi Richard,

Ouch! Yes, this is definitely a connection issue. This traceroute is quite bad unless you're using satellite. Unfortunately, for satellite, this is typical and there's not much we can do. For any other form of broadband (even dialup), this is pretty bad. In the 4th hop, the ping goes from a steady 40ms and shoots up to 100ms. This should stay relatively steady. It just gets worse from there, and pretty close to home, too.

Your next step should be to go here: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality
Sign up and run the test. Registration there is free. After you run the test, copy the link to the results for us, and take these results and the trace route above and share them with your ISP.

This could be an issue with your equipment, (modem, router, switches, network interface card, or even cables between them) but is more likely either a physical issue with the line/cable, or really bad routing.

We'd be interested to see the line quality report as well. Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help!

    Hi Steve

Thanks for looking at that for us. I ran the dslreports linequality test and the link is here:

    http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2289523

The test isn't to the actual PC but to the closest point that I could ping, in this case 80.86.224.98. It looks as though this is outside of our control other than reporting it to the ISP.

Do you know if any of the upload tools (even the third party ones) can survive line quality this poor or restart broken sends? If not then I will just need to get the photos sent back to me and I'll upload them. It's funny as I would have expected our folks in Afghanistan to have the biggest problems but it seems to be just fine for them.

Thanks again for looking and for the quick reply
