My daughters iMac mini will not boot. Is there a 'trick' or simple fix that someone knows? A hidden button?

I think "d" and power on will start hardware tools. this will run diagnostics...not sure if you can even get this to work...

Otherwise, pop in the system cd, see if it starts with that (HD may have failed). I think there are utilities on the disk too (been a while since I used a mac now)

    from Ann's other half...

    turn on computer
    light comes on.
    thingy beeps.
    grey screen comes on
    nice apple logo comes on
little circley dealy starts up and one bar turns a different colour in sequence...
repeat this last part for several minutes.
get frustrated and try to restart again...

discover that Apple support is down.

    repeat above steps.

discover that apple support is up but useless.

respond to Ann's "what is that beeping" with explanation.

respond to need for more information from smart apple guys on dgrin.

it's like using a PC with Vista.

How many beeps? It's a hardware issue, I think.

1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

Thanks, David, for decyphering that cryptic reply - one fairly long beep.

Ohhhh, overjoyed sounds from the daughter..."It's working" - followed the 'no longer useless' apple instructions.

    Thanks, again.

You've got bad RAM. Did you add any? If so, pull out the additional RAM and see what happens. If it's working now, then it may just need to be reseated. Take it out and click it firmly back into place. Or, replace it with new if that doesn't work.

So, we did not add RAM - is this likely to recurr?

And, I know that the support worked, I just live with Mr. Impatient....

I found that info by doing this google search:

    site:apple.com imac beep

    :D

I think it is likely to occur again. It could just be that the RAM needs to be reseated, which is easy. Or, the RAM could be failing. One of the two.
