They should have used higher res mini's - it's not like it's going to bog down the software, all it's doing is cachine sequentially - guess they wanted to save on bandwidth.

No one mentioned, so maybe it wasn't noticed, that site (Andrea Mosaic) offers the software to create the mosaics, for free, using your own images. They also have another (free) version that includes an image database if you don't have your own.
I think I'm going to download it and give it a try. If nothing else, it looks like it would be a lot of fun to play around with.
