Another watermarking transparent problem

I have read some of the discussion others have written regarding this topic and I still don't seem to get it. It almost seems to be luck that determines success vs. process.
I just created yet another watermark (peproof4) and when I chose the option to make it a watermark it shows up with the white/gray background when choosing the fade, etc. I know the image was created with a transparent background so why does it show up with a white background.
I also notice that when trying to test the watermark in my default directory that even though I have watermarking enabled for the directory, it didn't add watermarking to the photo tools directory like the other albums?
Thanks,
Lew

Photos must be larger than 800px on the long side, or they won't be able to be watermarked.

I thought you would have a way to connect my ID here with my account or could give me a general answer. The watermark is in my private Smug Mug directory and for testing I am trying to watermark the images in my private Smug Mug Directory and I already mentioned the image was peproof4:

It is possible the watermarking option didn't even appear as I suspect none of the images in that directory are over 800.
That doesn't explain why when I pick that image and specify I want to make it a watermark, that is shows it with a white background.
I have successfully made some other watermarks with transparent backgrounds but it seems to be hit and miss. Maybe it is possible it really has a transparent background but when showing the sample for purposes of determining how much to fade the image, it isn't showing it as transparent and it is hard to determine how much to fade it when it has a white background interfering with how the image would actually look in use.
Thanks,
Lew
